Now, don't think that just because they look terrible that a lot of people wouldn't take them home if they could. But you can't, we're told, because all oysters in the state are owned by farmers, oyster farmers. So wherever you see oysters growing, like in the wilds of Charleston, Oregon's backwater sloughs of Coose Bay, it's a safe bet they're a planted crop. And you shouldn't remove any. You could get in trouble. Growing oysters, it seems, is as tough and tenuous as growing other types of crops, but it takes two to three years for them to mature. Here at the Qualman Oyster Farms on the South Coast, aquaculturist David Moss says, oysters are seeded in tanks. The larva attached to old shells, which are then spread along the bottom or placed on stakes, which are driven into bottom mud. Oysters grow best in spring, summer, early fall, times of warm water and algae bloom. During winter, when food is not so plentiful, they don't grow much. But the money to pay that tax is not currently in their budgets. So school districts will have to raise their budgets to pay this new tax.
