I went over to the coast this weekend looking for bluebacks and I found them. I think the leading edge of the run is just now in. There's a few fish over there and I saw as many as four or five fish in one boat. If you're looking for something to do this weekend, you might try just any one of our coast streams. You'll hear people talking about fish like bluebacks, sea run cutthroat, and harvest trout. They're all the same fish and they come in this time of the year. It's a great fishery, and these fish run from 10 inches to as much as 22 or three inches. They're beautiful little fish. You might even hook a fish over there that'll go from two pounds to five pounds, and that'll be a jack salmon. And that's always a bonus to sea run cutthroat fishing. There's two or three ways you can fish for these fish. One is to fish trolling spinners in a worm, or you can cast a fly to them, or you might even take a light spinning outfit and cast a lure that you can catch into the bank. Whichever way you try for them. They're not tough to take if you can find them. If you go over there and hook one of these nice big fish, remember, keep your tip up. In his letter, Horton claims, these rifles can be purchased by adults in any locally owned sporting goods store. When questioned about that, Hortun said what he meant was, a stock Mini 14 could be bought and then modified with special equipment. Horton also wrote that the guns were no more or less dangerous than shotguns, pistols, nightsticks, saps or flashlights. Horton said the county's concern with liability was a question of training. He also said such bulk purchases for personal use were a long established practice. In fact, he says he has information that a similar purchase through the Lane County Sheriff's Office went to at least one judge as well as private citizens who had close friends in the sheriff's department. And he says a federal agent has told him Similar purchases occurred in the U.S. Attorney's Office. Horton declined to be more specific, but he said he would provide the details if the commissioners pressed their inquiry. Horton also denied making any misrepresentations and said the misdelivery to the sheriff was a clerical error. Said Horton, any confusion by the company who delivered these rifles is theirs and theirs alone. And he said no public money was used, so there was no need to use county purchasing procedures. The offspring of the moth, the larval or caterpillar stage of its life cycle, also has just one purpose, and that is to eat. Since arriving in North America over 100 years ago, the gypsy mouth has devastated vast areas of prime forest land in the northeastern United States. From there, it spread into Quebec and Ontario. In 1978, it suddenly appeared in a residential area of Vancouver. Although native to Europe, the moth adapts well to new environments. Unfortunately, its natural enemies do not. So the dilemma. Should we stand by and hope that nature unaided will eventually affect some kind of control? Or should we enlist man's technology to impose our own restraints? The annual story of the gypsy moth begins as spring's first leaves unfold. Each of these yellowish-white adhesions is an egg mass containing several hundred future gypsy Moths. They were deposited here the previous summer, alongside the empty brown pupa shells of last year's generation. Gypsy Moth egg masses can be found on trees, rocks, fallen branches and tree stumps, and on just about everything else that is on or near the forest floor. Where the insect is spread into built-up areas, the eggs will be adhering to farm equipment, storage sheds, picnic tables, window sills, children's toys, cars, and so on. Gypsy moth larvae are about six millimeters in length when they emerge. Because the moth is so prolific, infestations can build up to the point where huge numbers of caterpillars compete for the same food supply. So their natural instinct is to travel as far as possible immediately after hatching. Suspending themselves from fine silken threads, they await a favoring wind. Often, they merely land on the next branch. But strong gusts will sometimes result in flights of several kilometers. Gypsy moth caterpillars spend the next six weeks unobtrusively eating and growing. During this period, they outgrow and shed their skins several times, but retain the distinctive double row of blue and red dots along the back. During the first four instars, the larvae feed only in darkness. Each night, they travel up their host tree And attack the new, tender leaves as they develop. At dawn's first light, they descend and find shady shelter. This nocturnal habit reduces the risk of bird attack, but it can also delude man into thinking that there is no problem. It is easily possible to have a tree in one's backyard infested with hundreds, even thousands, of gypsy moth caterpillars and yet be completely unaware of their existence. Until the fifth instar, that is, when the larvae feed night and day and the extent of the infestation becomes obvious. Nearing the end of its larval life, the gypsy moth caterpillar is ravenous. Eating is a 24-hour occupation, and often results in the host tree being completely stripped of its leaves. Deciduous trees will normally regenerate their foliage before the end of summer, but will be weakened and more susceptible to disease and other insect damage. Total defoliation every year for several years will kill most deciduous trees. Evergreens and conifers will die after only one year of defolation. The moth's favorite tree species are oak, birch, and beech. But they'll move on to just about every other species, including ornamental and fruit trees. And if these are not within walking distance, they'll devour shrubs, flowers, food crops, even grass. By the beginning of July, the gypsy-mouthed larvae are preparing for the dormant or pupal stage of their life. They usually congregate on the tree","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70322/file/156266#t=3362.29,3751.299"}]},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70322/file/156266/transcript/86442","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["English [Transcript]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70322/file/156266/transcript/86442/annotation/146","type":"Annotation","motivation":"subtitling","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/086/442/original/trint_Coll427_0167_transcript.vtt?1762210789","format":"text/vtt","language":"en"},"target":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/086/442/original/trint_Coll427_0167_transcript.vtt?1762210789"}]}]}]}
