But even more important, Kevel says, are the possible impacts of water pollution on the Smith River fisheries and the impacts of disposal of mine tailings will have on the river watershed. Farnsworth says that even though the Cal Nickel plant in and of itself might not decimate the area, he says it will open the door to other operations of the same type on neighboring mountains. That allegation is supported by an opinion written by the California Attorney General's office last May. It says, it is probable that the approval of the CalNickel project will encourage development of other claims in the Smith River area. While CalNickel rewrites their environmental impact statement, they are just about to start construction of an $85 million demonstration plant at the town of Smith River. Cal Nickel manager Harris Loenhopt believes that plant will put to rest the claims of people like Farnsworth. He says this facility will demonstrate that the project does not pollute and is quite environmentally acceptable. CalNichel's Smith River plant would probably be well on its way to completion if it weren't for the Del Norte County Planning Commission. On February 15th, the commission said Cal Nichols' application was incomplete. It's not known whether Cal Nickel will send representatives to tomorrow night's meeting.
