Teams from across the West show up for the annual Oregon Dune Mushers Mail Run. It starts Saturday morning at the Horsefall Beach Recreation Area across the bridge from the city of North Bend. During the next two days, the mushers and their dogs work their way north to Florence. The great thing about these dogs is they love to run, and it's pretty breathtaking watching these wheeled sleds rip down the faces of sand dunes or splash across coastal creeks. Here's where you can get a closer look at the action. On Saturday, the teams leave Horse Fall between six and eight a.m. They'll lunch at the town of Lakeside from 1130 to 130 and arrive at Salmon Harbor that afternoon between 430 and 530. They'll overnight there at Winchester Bay. On Sunday, they leave bright and early. You'll be able to see them from the Oregon Dunes Overlook at mid-morning. They'll stop for lunch between 11 and 1 at one of the sites along the Silt Cuse outlet. Things wrap up around 2.30 in Old Town Florence. That's where you can enjoy all sorts of weekend events and a parade. The entry fees will help send an Oregon musher to Alaska's Iditarod later this winter. Meanwhile, a quick note from the folks at the Willamette National Forest. Beginning Monday, you can make summer reservations for a pair of rental properties on the Blue River Ranger District. They include the historic Box Canyon Guard Station. It's located on the After Heidi Drive, which runs through the mountains between Blue River and Oak Ridge. You can also reserve a night in the decommissioned Indian Ridge Fire Lookout. The facilities are furnished, although you'll need to bring some gear. Each rents for $40 per day.
