Those are the two factors that forced Eugene 4J School Superintendent Tom Dorland to recommend school closures for the district. A school closure task force was formed made up of parents, teachers, and 4J representatives to sort through enrollment figures and decide which school should be closed by 1982. The school board requested two plans, a kindergarten through fifth and kindergarten through sixth grade plan. Under one, nine schools would be closed, seven closed under the other. Under these plans. The district would be totally reorganized, and the possibility of middle schools and four-year high schools was something that parents and students would have to adjust to. Growing maintenance costs to an old inner city building forced Superintendent Dorland to take Lincoln School out of the task force jurisdiction. Dorland recommended that the school be closed at the end of this school year over the protests of area residents and the Eugene City Council. The council claimed that closing the school would contradict their plans for revitalization of the downtown area. But despite countless hearings, the 4J board voted unanimously to close Lincoln School. On the same day, Superintendent Dorland asked the board to accept his resignation. He cited disappointment in not being able to bring harmony to the school district as one of the reasons for his stepping down. Over in Springfield, the school district fights similar problems. Parents from a core area school passed out petitions to keep Bratton Elementary from being shut down. However, the School Boundary Commission in the state's fourth largest city. Is now recommending a set of adjusted attendance zones that would not entail school closures. Back in Eugene, the school closure process is expected to be a long one, with fights promised by neighborhood and parent groups to keep their schools open. But the fact remains that in the last 12 years, the 4J district has lost 3,000 students and no schools have been closed. Now something drastic must be done to consolidate. In Eugene, this is Rosemary Reed.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70282/file/156226#t=336.159,449.37
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70282/file/156226/transcript/86326/annotation/10
Speaker 7: Well, the suspense, what there was left of it, has ended this morning. 62-Year-old Paul Olem, a Harvard man, a PhD, and more recently, an administrator who has obviously won the respect of his peers here, has been named 13th president of the University of Oregon. The budget committee can't give him what he wants. He'll ask the commissioners to put a serial levy on the June ballot. And down the line, he's also looking at making the sheriff's department entirely independent of the county and its budget process. And another possibility would be. An independent law enforcement service district? Yes, that's a long-range idea, but it's something we're exploring. Berks met with county administrator George Morgan on Friday to go over the details of his budget. He said Morgan's now willing to let the sheriff decide how to make the cuts as long as they total $2 million. One problem in the county and the sheriff's share is that many law enforcement services are mandated by state law.
