Now, even though we had some unseasonably cold weather here last week, the weather was good in Southern California, and that means better produce and better produce prices for us here in Oregon. Among your best buys this week in the vegetable department are lettuce of all kinds, carrots, celery, spinach, onions, both green and red cabbage, and California asparagus, coming in now at the peak of its season. One thing to look for, artichokes will be coming down soon. The prices have been high, as high as a dollar each, but pretty soon they'll be cheap, so look for them. Over in the fruit department, however, we're seeing a little bit of stagnation as we're kind of between seasons. It's nearing the end of apple season, and apples which are coming out of controlled atmosphere continue to creep up every week in price. California oranges and Texas grapefruit, two other items, quality is still good, but higher prices. And the big item, bananas, as high as 45 to 49 cents a pound, a record price for bananas. Your best buy in the fruit department this week would be California strawberries, reaching the peak of their season, and prices as low as 59 cents a pint basket. Your most exotic buy this week would be tropical mangoes coming in from Hawaii. When you buy mangoes, try to buy two at a time, because remember, it takes two to mango.
