I guess everyone's coming back to school or going back to work after the holiday. And if you need some good news, well, I'm the person to talk to today, because fruit and vegetable prices in general are lower this week. Locally, we're getting some wonderful fruit coming in now. Some Bartlett pears, nectarines, hail peaches good for freezing and canning, president prune plums. And of course, the new apple crop is just starting here locally. Here's some Golden Delicious and some Red Delicious. Prices have been high. They will be coming down. Highest price item this week in the fruit department, bananas. As a soft fruit season comes to an end, bananas seem to go up in price. Last week, they were $0.30 a pound. This week, their closer to $0,40 a pound, looking at the local vegetable market. We're getting some wonderful local potatoes coming in, russets and reds, beautiful local broccoli in now as low as $0 40 to$ 0.50 a pound to very middle of the green bean in the corn season. The quality is excellent. Eggplant continues to come in and be very good. And finally, the vegetable item of the week This week... Local tomatoes. Now, we haven't had much of a local tomato crop here the last few years due to bad weather conditions. However, lest it keeps raining, we're going to have a good tomato crop this year. Tomatoes are very firm. They're round, they're red and ripe, and they actually taste like tomatoes, these local ones do. So go out and get some tomatoes this week, hoping all your labors are small ones. And the foreign markets have been held, keeping people at work and strengthening the American dollar. Although the Columbus Day storm's impact on Warehouser was larger, it had a lot in common with the eruption of Mount St. Helens. There are concerns about erosion, Insects and disease could easily infect the downed timber and move through the healthy nearby trees. Fire is always a problem. And then there is a concern for the terrible waste of our precious natural resource if action isn't taken to save it. And of course, there is the prime concern, employee health and safety. Nature can strike with swift, violent action rendering terror and destruction. But nature has marvelous recuperative powers, especially with the help of man. Warehouser has already invested thousands of hours and millions of dollars in the St. Helens area, recovering logs, rebuilding roads, making plans to recover the downed timber and reforest the area, preparing seedlings to go back into the ground, keeping mills running and people safely at work, keeping customers supplied here and abroad.
