But it's fair to say that there is some political motivation here, too. Well, perhaps the way in which I'm presenting this is somewhat political. I doubt that I'd be calling a press conference or looting the television stations and the newspapers. I think it is something the public should know, however. I felt pretty good the first 5 or 6 miles Debbie, but I guess 7 or 8 I could tell and my calves weren't too good. By 10 I could feel my thighs, I mean the quadriceps which is even the worst time, the hounds. And I just tried to think about dropping out then I shouldn't have. I thought I'd just try to hang on as long as possible and then after about 20, 21 miles I was really hurting and didn't try to finish. It wasn't my day. And concerns for the coming hour. I'm a 1500 meter runner, and so I run marathones just during cross-country season for the Miley. I'm going to get a person over there to check him out a little bit. There's a lot of people that are still over there letting you know. It grew completely around the tree, but as far as I can see, there's no evidence at all that that brush has impeded that tree. And on repeated measures... Admittedly, this is not our worst truck problem. I've got four feet to right here. I'll bend over and measure the leader. Releasing Douglas fir to grow to its full height is the job of the US Forest Service. Whether that's done by hand or by chemical application, it's essential for proper forest management. Today's tour may not solve the issue of forest management, but it certainly sheds light on both methods. Peter Murphy, I with this news, in the Willamette National Forest. The leader growth on these units has been less consistently. The units that have been sprayed have consistently less leader growth this year. And the units that were not sprayed, like last year we went to, had greater leader growth this year than last year. We'll also mention in the last part of the video, If you want to look for herbicide damage, I'll show you what to look for since you people apparently aren't too well-versed in this. If the herbicide is put on the tree too late after it started to grow, the current year's growth would be red and hanging down, very similar to frost damage. If this terminal leader growth was not killed, they'd all look like this, a condition known as epinasty, ...characteristic conifer damage. On from herbicide. I'm Ken Strobeck for Eyewitness News.
