I think that under these conditions, what we have existing today, that an increase of this magnitude is uncalled for. If we operated last year on that other budget, well, this is too much of an increase, roughly 20 percent. I don't think they can justify this to the people that we would have to increase this much. Everybody knows that the salary should go up a little because we have a cost of living. I'm in favor of something like roughly five percent above, which would give them maybe two percent above the cost of living but when you start raising the median salary, which would be roughly around 7,000 for the teacher without looking it up, while you figure 20 percent on that, Well, that's about $1300 or $1400 a year increase to the medium. Now, the principals and the other executives, I figure, are pretty well taken care of. The proposed budget on the principals roughly is $12,000 to $14,000 a year. Administrators, which is like Mr. Pons, would be $24,000 in a year, and I think that that's even more than the governor gets. And so I think by a little soul searching, a little working, we could cut this down. I feel pretty generally they supported what I tried to do, and they have been very disappointed by the same things that disappoint me. I wanted to shift over into the basic school support formula, the property tax relief account money, and the cigarette tax money, which has been collected but not yet disbursed for property tax relieve. I've tried to do these things and I think the people... Wanted these things done. It would have been good for Lane County and would have helped with school taxes this fall. That did not happen.
