Following that, they'll be in the atrium building until Christmas. Ken Embry, Iwinnis News in Eugene. At around 10 o'clock this morning, Eugene police and emergency medical units were called to the 3495 Kincaid Street home of Stanley Hughes by his 16-year-old stepson. The boy was apparently in the rear of the house when he heard a disturbance in the front rooms. Hughes and his new partner in a carpentry-type business, Robert Hiley, had been talking in those front rooms, and when the stepson arrived to investigate, he allegedly discovered Hughes mortally wounded by a gunshot. Police immediately sent out alerts for the gray 1973 Volkswagen van belonging to Hiley and within half an hour or so located it parked in front of the residence at 3695 Potter. Police teams approached the vehicle with great caution, inspected it and then departed the scene believing the van to be empty. But when KZI photographer Marty Stelzl went to the van for close up footage he noticed a man in the back and alerted officers still in the area. Police units subsequently returned in force and made a careful re-inspection of the vehicle. They discovered Marty's observation to be correct and bashed in the Volkswagen's locked doors. Inside, officers found the body of Hiley, apparently the victim of a self-inflicted wound from a pistol still gripped in his hand. At around two o'clock, the first victim was finally brought out of the Kincaid Street address. Hiley's body, meanwhile, remained in the van late into the afternoon for inspection by Eugene Detectives and lab crews. EPD spokesman Sgt. Mike Klein says the incident is initially being considered a murder-suicide, although investigation will continue on Monday. No further suspects are being sought in the case at this time. Oregon retailers are experiencing a good season, partly because we don't have a sales tax. People who live in states that have a sale tax will lose the sales tax deduction next year due to the new tax reform. So they are buying big items before the end of the year so the deduction can apply to their 1986 taxes. And consequently, they are spending less money on Christmas presents. And as the Christmas shopping tradition goes... Markdowns and big sales are popular at most stores this weekend, as retailers seek to move their inventory and attract those customers in the stores who just came in to return an item. Divorce cases involving custody and visitation would be referred to an in-house mediator. Well, there's that. And there's also the fact that it's not like most cases where the judge makes a decision, enters a judgment, and sends the parties on their way. We have to fashion some kind of a resolution that the parties can work with. You have a three or four-year-old child that comes to court in a custody matter, and those. Those parents legally have to cooperate as parents of that child for the next 15 years. Obviously, if they come in the court in an adversary proceeding, and that's what they're left with, that's not a very good start. So we have to try to fashion a result that they can make work for themselves over the next several years. Low to middle income earners usually don't itemize, so they wouldn't benefit from the 100% deduction available. But in 1987, they'll lose that option anyway.
