And one of the very easiest and best ways to figure out if this is a fresh tree or not is run your hand along the bow and the needles should not fall off. I'm being fairly rough here and those needles just aren't coming off at all. That's a good fresh tree. Shortly after the tree's cut, the butt of the tree will seal up and this tree will not drink any more water. So when you get the tree home, cut at least an inch, at least an inch off the butt. Make a fresh cut and get it in water right away. And the basic thing to look for in a stand is is a good wide base. The taller the tree, the wider the base. You want that tree to be real steady. You also want a large bowl. A five-foot tree will drink a couple of quarts of water a day, so you want a large bowl, you want that tree to keep drinking water. When you put the globe on the tree, you want to make sure that the needles are away from that particular globe. So you you pull them back and and doesn't detract from the tree at all and you've gotten your fire hazard away from your heat source. Here when you get it out, check it out. Make sure there aren't any frayed wires, make sure that the sockets are good and tight where the wires go through them. Look from from end to end. Here's a broken globe.
