This is what we call in public health and preventive medicine, primary prevention. And this is what we need if we're going to control this epidemic, if for no other reason than the stark fact that a high percent of first heart attacks are fatal, with half the fatalities occurring within 60 minutes of onset of symptoms, the common phenomenon of sudden death, mowing people down all too often, even before any medical care can be brought to bear to help them.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69224/file/155634#t=640.91,698.23
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69224/file/155634/transcript/79555/annotation/14
Speaker 5: What are some of the basic problems of the theater in the United States? I suppose one of the big problems, of course, is that we have no tradition of live theater in the United State. For all intents and purposes, I guess the live theater of the United States really began with O'Neill's first serious work. There was a theater a long time before that, but it didn't amount to much of anything. So maybe we've got a tradition of 40 years of live theater. Which is not enough to, I suppose, have people accustomed to the theater. You go to Europe, you go to Eastern Europe or in the West, and in Russia, by the way, I have never seen a seat empty in a theater. The nature of the involvement that an audience has in the play. In Eastern Europe. It's fascinating. They get so involved, they talk back to the actors. It is very nice. The Lane County taxpayers would pay the same amount of sales tax if it's enacted under this proposal, but they would not get the same amount of relief. Instead, all of the timbered counties, including Lane, would lose money by the truckloads to Portland and to other non-timbered areas. This is one of the reasons why I believe that basic school support is the best way to distribute any additional revenues, including some listing there now as a surplus. But the proposal that has been made will reward the rich county. It sends the money to the county on the basis of how rich it is in property value instead of sending it on the basis of where the children are that need education. It rewards richness and it will penalize the poor district struggling to take care of its children. We stop for a moment and reflect that in the United States, there are over 6 million children in these parochial schools, 90% of whom are in the Catholic school. We see the tremendous investment that has been made. Why? Well, basically, we believe, according to our philosophy, that our private schools can do something which the public school by law is not able to do, namely... Formally teach religion. We're not talking now about moral or ethical values. We know that repeatedly and as recently as yesterday in a talk in Portland at the Kiwanis meeting, our superintendent Dr. Parnell did indicate his great concern for stressing moral and ethical values in all the public schools. Well we're able to do this but By virtue of our structure, we can go a step farther. We can implement our own philosophy by the formal teaching of religion.
