I'll tell you, it takes a lot of nerve to wear a Chicago cub hat this week, the way they're playing baseball. At least the fruit and vegetable situation is a lot better than that. Well, what's red and luscious and ripe and grows a lot in the Willamette Valley? Strawberries. Strawberry season is coming on very strong. And I just found out recently that the strawberry season is going to be a short crop this year. All the strawberries are coming on ripe at once. So between the June 15th to June 25th, that's going to be the peak of the season. It's because we've had this late spring weather. Normally we have about a six-week spread. This this season is going to be about a four-week spread. So between June 15th to June 25th, now you picks are going for about 35 cents a pound, and already picked flats are running between seven to eight dollars. The quality is good, but remember, once again, it's going to be a quick season, so you want to get out there and get those local berries. What else is good in the fruit market? Well, cantaloupe and honeydew out of California coming in right now as low as 40 to 60 cents a pound. Excellent quality. Also out of California, peaches coming on. They're really the least expensive and the best of the California fruit right now, coming in at about 60 cents a pound. They were a dollar last week. Very good quality. Out of New Zealand, again, the Granny Smith apples, a little high price for an apple, but the best apple you'll find on the market. It's the only fresh apple as New Zealand has their fall when we have our spring. Swinging over to the vegetable market. Vegetables, not so good in news this week. Vegetable markets a lot higher. Cauliflower's up, cabbages up, broccoli's up, green peppers are up, tomatoes are up. Well, what does that mean? Well, I wouldn't avoid vegetables, but here's what you can do. I go took a little few mushrooms, a couple cherry tomatoes, a green pepper, a piece of onion, a piece of carrot, put them all on a shish kebab, maybe marinade this, put it on the barbecue for about five minutes. It's about forty cents a serving, and it's a wonderful treat. So you can afford vegetables, just gotta learn how to buy the vegetables right. So in all in all, it's not that bad of a week, just a little spending of a week. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70407/file/156351#t=1747.29,1853.11
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70407/file/156351/transcript/87004/annotation/81
Speaker 16: Truck stops are traditionally the spot where truckers flock when their trucks are empty and they need another load to carry. But this year, peach growers all over the country have been hit with bad weather, and Dietering estimates the nationwide crop could be only 30% of normal. But despite an estimated loss of at least $50,000, Dietering is optimistic about the future. Farmers have gotten used to telling themselves there's always next year. Twenty years ago, a bad crop didn't put the economic pinch on a farmer it does today. But now because inflation has already cut so heavily into the grower's profit margin, losses like this are a lot harder to take. The best part is that most places display their menus, and because the tables are outdoors, they have no choice but to display their food as well. Michelinos is popular. Italian cuisine that's really only so-so. Lunch runs about $5. You're really paying for the view. But if the crowds don't suit your taste, try what many folks say is San Antonio's best. It's La Louisiane. The food is French continental, and the prices are surprisingly moderate. $10 for lunch, double that for a bare bones dinner. But without a doubt, the best bargains in town are the many Mexican places. You'll think you're south of the border, which by the way is only a few hours away. Try Panchitos for lunch right near City Hall, and you have to have a local soda so you'll fit in with the local government crowd. The biggest tourist hangout of all, though, in town is a barnyard of a big place called Mitiera. It's quite reserved. Notice the Christmas ornaments displayed all year round. The food is okay, though, only a few dollars a person. But even better is a place owned by the same family only a block away. It's called La Margarita and could be the best Mexican restaurant you'll find. Be sure to get an order of beef strips called Fajitas. They're more than $8, but you get a full pound, enough for a few people.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70407/file/156351#t=3473.42,3550.78
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70407/file/156351/transcript/87004/annotation/142
Speaker 49: Well, so much for the eating story in San Antonio.
