Freezing that grated zucchini now allows you to put off using it until later. And many folks suggest zucchini relish for your excess. It tastes okay and keeps well. We've had this jar, for example, since the late 70s. While we're on the subject of zucchini recipes, let's not forget zucchini cake. My favorite recipe uses 12 cups of 18 cups of flour. One tablespoon of zucchini, half a dozen eggs, and two pounds of raisins. Still have zucchini left over? Well, the large ones make good paperweights. Terri Potassium uses them as barbells. Boy, these are heavy. I didn't want to let John Fisher down. I might have to change my name to Pee Wee Potassium. Anyways, I was speaking to a farmer the other day. He told me that the absolute best time to be buying fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly local things, is between August 15th and September 15th. And seeing that's right about the end of August must be the absolute best time to buy fresh fruits in vegetables. You heard it right for me. Over in the vegetable market. Lots of fantastic things, corn sweeted in sugar right now, green beans peak of the season, broccoli and cauliflower very very nice right now. Peppers, green and red bell peppers, fresh peas, zucchini although zucchini is peaked right now and it's starting to get pretty big as you can tell you can use them for barbells. But local produce coming on very, very strong. And you can tell we've had a good summer because we're getting fresh local red ripe tomatoes. How about that for a treat? And prices are very good. You can really save some money now buying local produce. Over in the fruit department, well, locally we're not seeing quite as much stuff. Sure, we're gaining some prune plums in right now, some nice local Bartlett pears, a few Washington and California nectarines. Peaches, well, we just about done with the red havens. We're getting into the canning, the Alberta peaches coming out of California. Still some good values on the market right now. Cantaloupes, cassavas, all kinds of melons coming in. As low as 19 cents a pound on cantaloupe, that's a real good buy. Other things happening, seedless grapes out of California. Grapes are going to be storage grapes now, meaning that they've been picked and put in storage and are being sold later. Running as low as 59 to 7 cents a pounds, another good value. It's Labor Day weekend, have a picnic, buy lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Have a good, safe weekend.
