Off-duty firefighters were awakened. A Springfield pumper came to the scene. Units from Santa Clara, Lane Rural, and Springfield covered the four empty Eugene stations. That made it the first general alarm fire in Eugene in over 10 years. Minor explosions kept the firefighters at bay, but they avoided a potential big bang by moving two gasoline trucks away from the gas station next door. Two firemen were injured, neither seriously. By this morning, the lumber building was still smoldering as fire marshals sifted for clues. The structure is so unstable that the decision was made very early on last night not to let any firefighters in. And this morning, they're still not letting anyone in. Well, I got my pesto sauce this week. And here it is. It's kind of the consistency of, say, glacomole. It's very, very delicious. And you know, if you don't have a mortar and pesto and you don't have a fruit processor, blenders don't work very well. You might get one of these little nut grinders for grinding up your basil. They're available at all the little cookware shops. Very, very good little implement, couple dollars, not too expensive. Excellent. Thank you, Susan. Delicioso. Anyways, moving right along. Fruit and vegetables this week. Well, fruits are a little higher, vegetables are a little cheaper. Locally, a lot of nice vegetables coming in. Highlighted by Blue Lake green beans coming in now, 30 to 50 cents a pound, excellent quality. Let's swing over and talk about fruit. Out of California. Cantaloupes, honeydews. Cantaloupes are up this week a little bit, honeydews are down. Honeydews, best buy in the melons, 19 to 39 cents a pound, excellent quality. California citrus, well, oranges have been high all year, they're still gonna stay high. Valencia orange is running anywhere from 40 to 60 cents a pound, very expensive. If you're looking for grapefruit, a lot of people have been looking for grapefruit. There is no substitute. There's still some California grapefruit, these large grapefruit. Don't expect miracles, you can use them for softballs, however, but they aren't too bad. Last of the season for grapefruit, about 50 cents a piece. Locally, peaches and nectarines are starting. Red Haven peaches, great for eating, not a good canner because they are a cling peach, meaning it's not a freestone peach, but good eating peaches. Same with the nectarines. Out of California, the highlight, Bartlett pears this week. I love these pears. They're a green pear, you let them sit at room temperature for a few days. They pick up a nice yellow color, they're very soft, wonderful texture, wonderful flavor. Pick a pair of Bartlett pears. That's the fruits for this week. Secondly, the Board of County Commissioners and the Lane County Private Industry Council became incredibly intrigued with the whole notion of foreign trade. And professional analysts were were commissioned to do a study which is entitled Lane County Exports to Pacific Pur Pacific Rim Countries and it was entitled a a study in in in future and potential markets. Then what they did is they cross-referenced products produced in Lane County with products imported in demand in the Pacific Rim. And I think there were some real surprises in there. For instance. Well, for instance, there are a number of products produced in Lane County, fruits, wheats, grains, and nuts, in the commodities section, which are are imported in large amounts in the Pacific Rim countries, none of which come from this area. What we typically do is we take our filberts from the McKinsey Valley, we pick them and bring them here, we take them to Salem. Salem there's a there's a nut factory in Salem owned out of California that then processes them and sells them back to us for twice what we sold them to them, and they export those to Pacific countries, Pacific Rim countries, and I just keep saying to myself, I at a certain point we need to get more sophisticated because our own resources are going out the window.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70433/file/156379#t=1895.159,1992.46
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70433/file/156379/transcript/87018/annotation/68
Speaker 36: What kind of role I mean, having gotten this information, what kind of role can the county play in making some kind of changes?
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70433/file/156379#t=1993.29,1998.81
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70433/file/156379/transcript/87018/annotation/69
Speaker 37: Well, the foreign trade study does one of two things. It focuses, it is a beginning document and it focuses on two levels. It has real value to people who are in the business or who are considering getting in the business, in the sense that it's a cookbook. It names names, it names countries, it names processes, it tells them where to go. Beyond that, at a policy and procedural level for the private and public sector, there's some real signs there of local initiatives that we can take to eliminate some of the red tape and barriers that we put on business ourselves so that they're less competitive. The Export Trade Act is in Washington. It's it's it's being sponsored by a representative from the state of Washington. I know that Oregon senators and representatives are getting very interested in it. That would eliminate the export barriers that medium and small businesses have now. The thing that was a shock to me again as I got deeper and deeper into the foreign trade issue and particularly relating it to our community is ninety percent of the foreign trade is done by ten percent of the countr companies and they just happened to be the largest, biggest companies in the in the country. I think the purported humor is what bothered me the most. The sexual jokes aren't even on par with the junior high school crowd. These are all the comebacks we used to shout at the screen in our younger days. As for the rest of the script, it reads like a child's garden of bigotry. There are the gay jokes, the racist gags, and a series of well-timed burps that are supposed to reduce us to gales of laughter. These jokes are so worn they should be in a museum. Policemen from Eugene and Springfield surrounded the house and blocked off traffic on Garden Way and Harlow Road. A special tactical team arrived at the scene later. Police communicated with Wallace by patching into a phone line. Wallace allegedly threatened to shoot at police, maintaining the vigil outside the house. Shortly before 7:30, the negotiations by phone succeeded. Wallace surrendered and came out of his home holding his son in his arms. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of menacing. Loading some shells, getting the old gun out and cleaning it up, getting your camouflage stuff out to see if it's gonna be alright. It's only two weeks till dove hunting and pigeon season opens. That's different than it was last year. They opened dove season one week, pigeon season two weeks later. This year they both opened the first of September. I just talked to the game commission. One of the things I like to do this time of the year, the fishing is good now too, besides the hunting, so I like to take a run over to the coast. Fish for bluebacks or harvest trout that come in in the fall over there. After you fished a while for bluebacks and harvest trout, run up in the hills, see if you can find you a place to shoot some pigeons. Works really good this time of the year. Whatever you do, get out there and have a good time at it.
