Raspberries, blueberries, cherries. Raspberries, blueberries, cherries. Raspberries, blueberries, cherries. Hi there. We're here live at the Produce Convention. And there's a lot of fruit here too. And it's really a great week for fruit. California tree fruit coming on really strong. Plums, peaches, neptarines, as low as 49 cents a pound. Excellent quality. There's about 60 varieties of plums on the market, and they are all sweet right now. Other things out of California. Grapes, green seedless, red seedless, black seedless grapes coming in as low as 99 cents a pound, depending on size and quality. Very, very sweet. Melons, cantaloupes and honeydews, a little higher this week, a little in short supply. Watermelons out of California. 13, 12, 13 cents a pound. Wonderful right now. Locally, raspberries, blueberries, cherries. Like I said, all the berries coming on really strong. Strawberries are done, but there's local boysenberries, local raspberries, local blueberries. Blueberries, an all-American fruit discovered in the early 1600. Some English guy found some Indians gathering them. They've been cultivated for about 200 years now. They're an all-American fruit. Not to be confused with Huckleberries. Huckleberries have seeds. Blueberries don't. Other local items. Apricots. Who puts the ape and apricots? Wizard of Oz, if you don't remember. Apricots coming in out of Washington right now, a little higher this year, a short supply, about 99 cents a pound. Bing cherries coming in out of the Pacific Northwest. Not named after Bing Crosby, but the Bing Cherry Crop, 69 to 99 cents a pound. Wonderful right now. So it's a great week for fruit. I was going to talk about Walla Walla sweet onions, but I'm going to save those for the Republican convention. What to do this weekend? Dove season opens. If you've read the regulations, you know we've got an increase in the bag limit on doves this year. That's the only good story I could read out of the regulations when I read them the first time. If you're going to go out this weekend though, you want to remember to be safe and don't walk past any postage signs getting out in your favorite dove shooting field. Also, pigeon hunting opens this weekend. You might want to go down on the coast somewhere in the high hills up over in the elderberries, see if you can kill yourself a mess of pigeons. But if you don't want to go pigeon hunting this weekend, there's still some good fishing around. I know Dorina Reservoir's got some catfish in it. I've heard some good stories about the lower Umquan and Lower Souslaw having sea run cutthroats in it. Guy might even want to chase one of those early salmon, although we need a couple of days of rain. The rain is the reason our dove shooting is probably going to be the best thing to do this weekend. For three years in a row, every few days, just a few days before dove season opens, we have a big torrential rain, sends all of our doves south. This year we haven't had that rain, so it should be really good this weekend. If you want to get out there and shoot a few doves, remember to be safe all the time. Don't take that safety off until you're absolutely sure what you want to pull that trigger on. Get out there and have a good time, shoot a few doves, and be sure to give me a report.
