Do you realize there's only 354 days left in the year? My how time flies. Anyways, here we are in wintertime. Over in the fruit department, we've got a lot of good things happening. A lot of vitamin C type food. Citrus, oranges, naval oranges coming out of California. There's a lot of large navels, you see with the big protruding navel on the market right now. Orange markets are down, oranges are running about 29 cents a pound. Pretty good quality, nice sweet oranges. Other good citrus coming in right now out of California. Tatsuma Tangerines nearing the end of their season. Orlando Tangello is coming in right now, very good. From Morocco, the Clementine's coming in imported. Also, out of California, Texas, and Florida, new crop of grapefruit. We haven't seen any Texas grapefruit the last couple of years because of the bad weather down there, but they're back on the market now and they're very good. Also, the Indian River grapefruit are back on the market. Out of California, kiwi fruit, call them the strawberries of winter. Because they taste very similar to strawberries. They're a nice soft fruit. Originally grown in New Zealand. Now we have a giant industry in California and very reasonable, about a dollar and a half for a one-pound bag. Also, bananas coming in right now. About as cheap as I've seen bananas in a few years as a banana banana production is up in general all over the world. Bananas coming in at about 19 to 29 cents a pound, very good value. Over in the vegetable department, we had to be seeing some high prices. This week, better news. Head lettuce is down about half of what it was two weeks ago, about 59 cents a head. Very reasonable. Also, most of your staple vegetables are very reasonably priced this week. Broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, eggplant, which normally get really high this time of the year, are all very reasonable. And finally, that brings us to tomatoes. Now, the tomatoes right now are coming out of Florida. The criteria for a good Florida tomato, so if you can hold them up by your head and drop them on the floor and they don't break, that means they're good. Well, tomatoes are not so bad. And as Sir Percival Blakely used to say, nothing is quite so bad as something that is not so bad. My advice is to avoid tomatoes this year. Finally, I want to thank my mom and dad for making me eat all those fresh fruits and vegetables. See how healthy I am. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70883/file/156834#t=1842.409,1967.17
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70883/file/156834/transcript/87658/annotation/90
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70883/file/156834#t=1973.16,1973.56
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70883/file/156834/transcript/87658/annotation/91
Speaker 42: It was December 1977 when Oregonians were shocked over a drug bust that netted 17,000 pounds of marijuana in a boat off the coast of Bandon, Oregon.
