This is an extremely well done study that looks at data from 135 military hospitals between 1991 and 1993. And importantly, they found that the rate of birth defects was essentially the same for children born to Gulf War veterans, both men and women. Compared to active duty military personnel who weren't veterans of the Gulf War. Additionally, this study showed that there wasn't a higher rate of birth defects compared to the general population. Whatever exposure, whatever agent, whatever agents or diseases are involved in affecting health of Gulf War veterans, they do not seem to affect the children of the veterans. Now, it's important to remember that this finding does not confirm or deny Gulf War syndrome or any related diseases. And it doesn't look at small subgroups of the vets that may have had specific exposures. It just looks at the overall veterans. There are exposures that will cause miscarriages and that will caused birth defects. Organic chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, radiation, those will all cause pregnancy problems, but only when the woman is pregnant during the time of the exposure. It's extremely rare for an agent to cause birth defects or pregnancy problems later on. Given all the qualifications of the study, overall I have to tell you that the study is reassuring about the risks of birth defects among Gulf War veterans.
