You take the turn off from Highway 34 and climb past a mix of forests and prairie. Along the way, you can sample the fall colors and the sound of a year-round running spring. Close to the summit, there's a parking area. You'll have to hike the next half mile to get to the crest. Up top, you'll share the space with some microwave relays, but who cares when you get such a sweeping panorama of the Willamette Valley and beyond? Oh yeah, excellent view. Got the Three Sisters out there to the right. Dead ahead, Mount Jefferson. Hoods off to the left and out in the haze, you can kind of see the silhouette of Mount Adams up in Washington State. And back down here at the toe of the valley, you can see Spencer Butte and Mount Pisgah and the Coburg Hills just sort of swimming in the valley haze. To the west, that distant shimmer is the Pacific Ocean. With a good set of binoculars or a telephoto lens, you can actually see some offshore breakers. And all around you are the forests and the valleys of the coast range and enough quiet to soothe your soul. As the sun slowly drops in the west, you can watch the mountain cast its shadow to the east and enjoy a lazy fall afternoon. Mary's Peak is an easy drive from the mid Willamette Valley. From the south Willamett Valley and Eugene Springfield, take Interstate 5 to Highway 34, follow it through Corvallis and Philomath.
