Vice President Dan Williams says the school has prior authorization for the Autzen project from the State Board of Higher Education. Public announcement is planned for early next year after details are finalized. Revenue from the Sky Suites will be used to construct new athletic facilities for students and staff at Oxon. Those will include a 15,000 square foot weight room, reportedly one of the largest in the country, and some 90,000 feet of office space. But the cost wasn't measured solely by the number of trees destroyed. Most of the fire burned within the watershed for the city of Dallas, its main water supply. The fire broke out in late October, a month when less than an inch of rain fell, a time when water was so scarce that helicopters pulled it from the reservoir to fight nearby fires. The reservoir is full again, and while the fire is still smoldering in the roots of old snags, it has long since died everywhere else. The concern now is for the quality of the water. The hills are turning green again. It's grass seed that was planted after the fire. It's intended to keep the soil on the sides of the hill and prevent it from washing down into the reservoir. But there is a note of irony in all of this, because while it will prevent erosion, it will also dry by next summer, creating another fire hazard. In addition to the receding, straw barriers have been built across canyons to stem erosion. A rock diversion dam was built across Rockhouse Creek to trap debris.
