But any time any investment has increased 10 or 15 times in value, the risk is substantially higher. Several names bring back memories of grisly murders and unrest. Perhaps the most shocking was the murder of Kay Turner. She disappeared near Camp Sherman last year on the day before Christmas. She left that morning for a run. Eight months later, searchers discovered her jogging shorts, a shoe, a wristwatch, and a jawbone that was confirmed to be that of Mrs. Turner. State police classified her death as a homicide. The search continues for her aggressor. Initially a Springfield man confessed to murdering Kay Turner. Richard Wayne Godwin wrote out his confession while serving time in the Oregon State Penitentiary. But Godwin later said he was pressured into making that confession in exchange for protection promised by fellow inmate Floyd Forsberg. Forsberg denied this, but Godwin was vindicated of Turner's murder charges and the murder of a six-year-old Springfield boy. Godwin WAS convicted for the murder a five-year old Andrea Tolentino. Tolentino vanished from the back of her mother's car in Blue River. Her skull was found in Godwin's trailer home, but a thorough search of the yard unearthed no other human bones. Andrea Tolentino vanished this three months after Summer Rogers was reported missing in July of 1976. At first, officials believe the skull was that of Rogers, also five years old. Her headless body was found on the riverbank of the Willamette River. Her death also remains unsolved. In November, Lane County was reeling with the news that another grisly murder would have to be retried. The Oregon Supreme Court reversed the murder conviction of Charles Haynes in the 1978 murder and dismemberment of Pamela Lee Bruno. The court ruled unanimously that Springfield Police had frustrated an attorney's attempt to see Haynes after his arrest. The case was sent back to Lane County for a new trial. The District Attorney's Office is preparing to appeal that reversal all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. Haynes' wife Leonetti was the second of three people charged with Bruno's murder. Leonetti has been lodged in the Lane County Jail since March 1978, awaiting trial. But her court proceedings have been caught up in pretrial motions and appeals regarding controversial evidence. At this point, a trial date has not been set. The reputation of the Eugene Downtown Mall was darkened on April 19th with the fatal stabbing of 26-year-old Gregory Allen Ford. This was Eugene's only murderer this year. During the two-week trial, eighteen-year-old Tony Charles was described as a fighting gang leader, whose turf was the mall. He was convicted of murder after the jury deliberated fourteen hours. Charles is yet to be sentenced. He faces a maximum penalty of death after the death penalty was reinstated by Oregon voters. Tension and unrest rocked the Lane County Jail in May when sixteen inmates staged a riot and destroyed five cells. Allegations surfaced that night. Charging jail director Captain Paul Bailey with unnecessary assault of an inmate. The inmate later filed a lawsuit and settled out of court. An internal investigation was conducted and a review board recommended that Bailey be fired. Lane County Sheriff Dave Burks ignored their recommendation and settled on a reprimand. The district attorney's office has not yet decided whether or not to press criminal charges against Bailey. This also sits in limbo. This was violence in Lane County in 1979. Starting with the Association of Western Pulp and Paperworkers, that strike carried over from December of 78, idling over 2,000 mill workers. Pickets stayed on the line at Warehouser until an $8.25 an hour base salary was granted over a three-year contract. A bid for higher wages prompted pickets to appear at your local grocery store. The retail clerks found that the rising price of groceries, among other things, force them to strike for higher wages. The tearing down of this strike notice marked the end of the Hughes Air West labor clash. A 33% wage increase over a three-year period helped the top banana employees fuel tops once again. Earlier in the year, United Airlines workers also went on strike. Passengers found the skies not so friendly as they tried to book alternative flights. Discount coupons offered by both airlines helped ease the inconvenience later in year. The rising price of diesel fuel was one of the factors that caused independent truckers to set up blockades on the highways nationwide. Governor Vic Atia threatened court injunctions to halt blockades at truck stops in Oregon. A candlelight march was one the tactics used by nurses at McKenzie Willamette Hospital to draw attention to their plea for higher wages and a more equitable sick leave policy. An old-fashioned soup line was provided for the 125 nurses who drew support from their colleagues throughout the state. After almost a full month of picketing, the nurses were eager to get back to serving the health needs of the community. Of all the strikes, Eugene's first teacher strike, starting September 4th, probably had the most impact. Tempers flared on the picket lines as classes were kept in session with non-union replacement teachers.
