In South Eugene, where the rental vacancy rate is about 1%, and apartment construction is almost non-existent, prices seem to be going higher and higher every year. Two bedroom apartments in this complex rent for $450 a month. This one bedroom cottage goes for $500. The rental price for this bungalow is $650 a month, And this house rents for $1,200. Hank Morrison lives in a one-bedroom apartment over a frame shop on West 11th. In 1987, he was paying $150 a month to live there. Now the rent is $325. In the Eugene-Springfield area, the average rent for a two-bed room apartment increased 12% from April 1988 to April 1989. In the Ferry Street bridge area alone, rents overall have gone up 27% over the past 27 months. Since the mid-1980s, high rental demand and low supply have turned this into a landlord's market. One shop, Cranberry Sweets, specializes in tart but tasty confections. Sample the cranberry fudge, a truly unusual flavor, based on a secret recipe two years in the making. Bandon is an important harbor with a picturesque boat basin, and a striking sternwheeler offers twice-daily summer cruises of the Coquille River. On the opposite shore stands the Coquille River Lighthouse, decommissioned but recently refurbished. Located in Bullards Beach State Park, it was, in 1896, the last light station established on the Oregon coast. The oldest Oregon lighthouse is just 20 miles to the south at Cape Blanco, a place where the land meets the sky and sea. Cape Blanko was named by Spanish explorers for its chalky cliffs. The westernmost headland on the Oregon coast, its light station is closed to the public, but other parts of the Cape remain open for exploration. There are commanding views of the sweeping sand and sea, to the north sea stacks float above the morning mist. To the south, the shore stretches toward the bluffs of Port Orford. Port Orford is the western most incorporated community in the contiguous states and a place proud of its ocean view. At Battle Rock State Park, visitors can read about the clashes between early settlers and the local Indians that gave the spot its name. Port Orfford enjoys a natural deep water harbor, which makes it an ideal fishing center for salmon, rockfish and sea urchin. The short summer fishing seasons and low market prices have idled many of the commercial crap.
