But by the end of the decade, Conner was tiring of his years in bondage. He passed up the chance to star in the 1969 film on Her Majesty's Secret Service. Audiences were cool to his replacement, Australian model George Lazenby. So Connery returned, on a one-time basis, to film the 1971 adventure Diamonds Are Forever, then said, Never Again. James Bond's trademark Beretta revolver and fondness for vodka martinis shaken, not stirred, fell to actor Roger Moore. And with the changing of the guard came a continued changing in the emphasis of the Bond films, away from the original seriousness of the Fleming novels to the increased gadgets, gimmickry, and wisecracking humor that distinguish the later movie efforts. In 1987, Timothy Dalton inherited 007's mantle in The Living Daylights. He walked a dramatic tightrope between the two bonds created by Connery and Moore and kept his balance. Actress Carrie Lowell, one of Bond's beauteous sidekicks, loses a lot of her luster to the other main characters and singer Wayne Newton is wasted in his throwaway casting as a televangelist, but the rest of the film is filled with excitement and adventure. Dalton handles the lead role well and does more than his share of the stunt work which includes a fairly spectacular truck chase. Licensed To Kill is rated R most likely for its violence, the usual racy opening credits, and some FANATY! It's playing at Movieland and Springfield Quads. In all, there have been 17 other Bond films during the past 27 years. They are all available on videocassette. They include the 15 produced in the United Artists Studio series and Two Outsiders, the 1967 spoof Casino Royale, and the 1983 production which featured the return of Sean Connery. It was appropriately entitled Never Say Never Again. The Connerty Bonds remain my favorites, along with the newer entries by Dalton.
