Well, in most parts of the country, you can judge by the weather. However, I haven't found that to hold true here in Oregon. But despite our cool, cloudy days, I do know that it's summer. The recent Olympic trials were a definite sign of summer, as is the baseball crowd which gathers at Civic Stadium and the annual fall football schedule that's already up. It must be summer, because school ended at least a month ago and all the swimming pools are open, even if no one's getting wet. I'm sure it's summer when it's not raining on the coast and tourists are walking the streets of Newport. The farmer's market is a welcome summer sign and I know something's up because I'm finding melons in the grocery store and there's more around to can than just a rotten employee. Of course it's Summer. Winter clothes are already decorating department store windows and the commissioners are arguing about the country fair. If it's now summer, what are all these Californians doing in Oregon? And why is the summer symphony playing downtown on the mall? It just has to be summer. We're also seeing some local head lettuce, local zucchini, green beans, peas, and cucumbers. Be sure to watch your papers or read your fresh produce market buyer's guide, because the vegetable scene is really starting to happen now. Switching over to the fruit market, we're seeing very good buys on California fruit. Local fruit is just starting to come on. We've got from California peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots. Apricots from Washington about two weeks away. Cherries from Yakima, a good buy. Granny Smith apples, the only fresh apple on the market. A little expensive, but a good by. And some melons coming in now. The prices are dropping on those also. Best buys this week in the fruit department are local raspberries and local blueberries. This picking season on these have just started about a week ago. If the weather holds, it should be a good season for both raspberries and blueberries. Prices are a little up from last year, but what isn't up from last year? You pick is always cheaper. Watch your papers for special, but make sure you try some of the local berry crop this year. Nearby residents and curiosity seekers crowded by the barricades. Attempts to contact Bearden by phone were unsuccessful, so the waiting game began. Shortly after eight, the tactical team made its way to the house. It was only a precaution. There were no plans to use force. Dressed in fatigues and bulletproof vest, the officers cautiously positioned themselves around the home. Hostage negotiators followed, bullhorns in hand. Just as they were about to call out to Bearden, he calmly walked out the front door and with a little shrug, gave himself up. Bearden was taken back in the house. When he re-emerged, it was with a piece of material shielding his face from the cameras. He was taken into protective custody. Police say their investigation is continuing. The $4 admission ticket does seem a little steep, but that's not stopping a lot of people. Once inside, it's just relax and enjoy. If you just emptied your pockets getting inside, there are more than enough free things to see, smell, and hear among the 300 booths. And then there are a few things that can't fit into a booth. Of course, if you have a few spare shuttles, you might sample any of a dozen or so more varieties of food and drink being offered. Don't look for a cheeseburger and fries at the country fair, but you'll find the raspberry lemonade and fruit salad quite tasty.
