These programs started showing up in the schools in the late 70s. It wasn't until the 70s that the Supreme Court said a child could go to school even if they were pregnant. And so when that started coming in by law, programs like this started showing. In some cases for years and while I can't give you a real feeling of what's going on in the 30 seconds or so that we got a lot to watch in the dogs dance it's very impressive not only are the dogs and their masters well choreographed wonderful little costumes on the critters too and in a bit we'll let you watch the dogs dancing a little bit more but I thought I'd let you watch the clouds dancing in our direction briefly too because we've got quite an in combination of storms coming up. Right now it's 47 degrees and we've had a mere four hundredths of an inch of rain so far today but there's a lot more than that on the way before all the weekend dog activities are finished. How about a look at the highs from around the rest of the dog dancing competition on the coast. Rain increasing tomorrow and sticking around right on through Sunday. Temperatures in the 50s. Up in the Cascades, as I mentioned, the likelihood of a few flurries tonight, then snow on the increase tomorrow from San Diego, should say, well I'm going to pass south into Crater Lake about half a foot tomorrow and then more snow and colder, especially as you head north on Sunday. Snow level fluctuating between 3 and 5,000 feet, then a few furries at times and then some rain and kind of cool temperatures for Sunday. For Roseburg, you can expect a wet weekend. Tomorrow afternoon could be some downpours and the wet weather will stick around on For Corvallis and the Eugene Springfield area, sorry football fans, it looks wet. Both Saturday and Sunday, plenty of rain around highs, staying in the low 50s. Recapping and taking a look out through the weekend, lots of rain on the Springfield Red Line. That's where the competition is taking place and they'll be dancing through about 10 o'clock. Right now there's no way you could get in. I'd wait about an hour if you want to see the dogs performing with their masters, but right now it is absolutely jam-packed down here.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326#t=568.84,685.82
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326/transcript/89790/annotation/39
Speaker 8: Now Lisa, didn't John tell us he was going to show us other dancing animals besides dogs?
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326#t=687.18,690.4
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326/transcript/89790/annotation/40
Speaker 5: Yeah, John, what about that? What didn't used to cause a flood is now causing the banks uh... The worst problems are up around the Dexter Road, or excuse me, up at Lost Creek Road near Dexter. Let's take a look at one of the family's homes that we're talking about tonight. The water has risen within inches of entering the living area of a house you're just about to see. Neighbors have gathered to fill sandbags and they are trying to keep the water from coming in. Now this area did not have too many problems last year during the flooding, surprisingly enough, but as you can see... This house is having a lot of problems right now. Now, people aren't all that sure why it's come up so far so fast. They say it happened like this back in 1988, but this is looking like it'll even be worse. The only good thing that can be said about this particular chunk of water is that it tends to go up and go down in a hurry. So if it stops raining, the folks there are kind of hoping it'll ease off in a hurray. The sand here came from a sand and gravel yard up in Oak Ridge. But as you might have heard, Highway 58 is closed at this point. So. It doesn't look like they're getting any more sand from that area. But it looks to me like the people that are there don't want to go away, because they're the only thing at this that's going to save their house, so there are people who aren't going to be able to drive into their homes. But we did see people walking through waterways to get to their house because the road that leads to their houses might have a stream going through it right now. Numerous areas that are having some minor flooding problems and because it's going to rain another two inches here in the south end of the valley and another four inches on the coast those flooding problems will only be aggravated it looks like after about the next uh... Twenty four to thirty six hours the range of start to taper off let me give you a quick look though at some of the highlights are the extra amounts of rain open to the show a lot of spots have been having flooding problems or you know minor flooding problems that didn't Even last year during the flood, the stream beds have probably been changed in a lot of locations by the gravel that was deposited by last year's flood. So you may be getting kind of an early warning. This is a two-day storm. You'll find out if you're having a problem for the rest of the winter in the next two days, and you may have a chance to deal with that. And coming up at 11, we'll fill you in on who all is having problems and which roads are difficult to pass across. Right now, Santee Ampass has reopened. They've cleared the snow slides, but unless you have to go, it would be just as well to stay away from those areas.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326#t=982.58,1063.92
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326/transcript/89790/annotation/64
Speaker 5: All right, thanks, John. The worst delays were up to two hours at times for southbound traffic backing up cars and trucks on this usually open stretch of roadway for more than 20 miles. Now there were also some evacuations locally of people from these waters but as far as the freeway itself goes tonight the southbound lanes are open traffic seems to be breaking up but northbound lanes for anybody going northbound tonight it's still backed up and probably will remain this way for at least another couple of hours.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326#t=1539.42,1606.2
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71374/file/157326/transcript/89790/annotation/99
Speaker 8: Bob, you're from Portland. We're going to talk to some folks here in a few minutes. You know, I wanted to tell you a little bit about this afternoon. There was close to five inches of rain that fell on Interstate 5. And along the central Oregon coast and the southern Willamette Valley. North Bend reported more than six and a half inches of rain today. The rains caused small creeks to swell and overflow their banks and travel along stretches of our highways slowed to an absolute crawl. All day the sheriff's deputies helped to evacuate residents including some people on the south fork of the Willamett. First of all, drive slow. You usually can't see high water until you're right on top of it. Secondly, if the water is getting high in your neighborhood, see if you can go down and clear the leaves or whatever debris is away from the storm drains. But. And they underline, do not under any circumstances remove the covers off of the storm drains. And if it gets too much and then the drains are all backed up and you can't do anything about it, you can call the Public Works Department. But it does tend to help if you can get those leaves out of there. Incidentally, if you are in need of a shelter or if someone you know needs to get to a Red Cross shelter tonight, here are some of the places you can go to. The LDS Church off of Mohawk and Springfield, that's right behind the Ford Grill. Our Lady of Perpetual Hope in Cottage Grove. But this time, the road gave way, and miraculously, he lived to tell us his story. Rick, as you can see here, the sinkhole is the whole right lane of the I-5 is missing.
