There are new bills that are pending that go further than anything that we have seen in the last fifty years in this country even as legislative proposals and these have reached the point of passing one house of congress and possibly uh... Good chance of passing in the other house my judgment is that this crisis uh... Is so great that none of us can be sure that uh... It can be turned back i am hopeful some of the things that i have been seeing the meetings that i've just attended as a guest of the. American civil liberties union as well as the meetings of our own national committee against repressive legislation, that there is a growing awareness on the part of all kinds of people, not just students and black militants, but on the parts of many, many middle-class Americans, including many, liberal Republicans, who see the danger to our civil liberties that is growing out of the continuation, the polarization that from the war in... Vietnam. I believe that it is possible, there is still time, that the old forms of political action to try to make the democratic process work can be brought into play. But at this point, unless many Americans speak out, who have up to this point been silent, the dangers to our country are most serious. Well, I believe that the right of dissent is the heart of the democratic process. Unless Americans have the full flowering of the First Amendment, we cannot be sure that any aspect of the Republican form of government can continue. And when we say that, we're talking about the open marketplace. So you see, you had the three things in line. The male jailers taking care of men at the top were the highest. Then the man who was taking care of cats at the animal refuge. And down the scale was the woman, the matron at the jail, who was paid to take care of women. And they're paid less. They've had fewer increases and so forth. We know of instances, too, of women who've gone out looking for jobs recently in Eugene and been told about jobs for which there are male counterparts and the woman starting pay has been much lower than the male starting pay, these kinds of things. I think that the discrimination against women operates at almost every stage in the uh... The occupational pattern. You know, it's at the point that the girl goes out looking for a job, or the woman goes out, looking for jobs. She's channeled into certain kinds of jobs, usually, that are defined as women's jobs, or girls' jobs. She often defines herself in these jobs, but even if she's looking for another kind of a job this is often all that's open to her. Symptomatic of this are the male... Help wanted ads, you know, male and female, which are still running in this way in the Register Guard, although I think technically it's no longer in accord with the law to run the ads in this. I think discrimination then happens within the organization that women are less often promoted into desirable jobs. I know of one Eugene organization, for example, which women have wanted to move to better paying, higher status, more interesting kinds of positions. And they have been consistently refused. I don't want to name names or anything at this point, but this points to another problem that's a little off your question, and that is that very many women simply don't wanna make a fuss. And they're tremendously hesitant about coming out and saying that they think they've experienced any discrimination. This makes it very difficult to get at, too, They're so fearful. I think they're fearful because they don't like to challenge men in an open kind of way and they're all so fearful about their job possibilities. And I'm sure this has happened from time to time. So it's at high. Many of these programs survive even though they are not economically sound We are going to have a terrific shortage of timber in this country over the next few years, running into later in the decade. If we do the right things now, we can overcome a continuance of that shortage into the 1980s. And so we have to get started.
