I read a book once called Stalking the Wild Asparagus by E.L. Gibbons. And you don't have to go out and stalk any wild asparagus. Now is a good time to go down to your supermarket and pick up some nice fresh asparagus because asparagus is coming in season now. It's a short season, usually runs from March through June. The asparagus we're getting now is out of the Imperial Valley in California. Prices are ranging around a dollar a pound now, and that's for a good. Good night. One thing about asparagus, there's a lot of argument as to whether the thick spears are better than the thin spears. Either way, the most important thing is how you cook asparagus. Don't overcook it. Steam it lightly, about eight to ten minutes, or saute it. Never put it in boiling water. That's the best way to enjoy your asparagus! Speaking of the grass always being greener on the other side, this isn't pieces of my lawn that I brought down. This is fresh chives. Chives and asparagus are cousins to each other. They're both members of the lily family. And chives are a great vegetable right now. You plant these either in the window sill as an herb, or you put them out in your yard, where they will grow and propagate. Both of these vegetables are perennials. The best way to enjoy chives is much like green onions. If you've never had them, they have a much more delicate flavor than green onions, Take your baked potato, run outside, cut the tops off of your chives, sprinkle them in your baked potatoes. Voila! They're excellent. At the end of the season, you cut the chives way back, throw them in the freezer. They freeze well. In the next spring, your chive will come back and you'll have even more chives. So chives and asparagus, two of the best vegetables for you to stock right now. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70925/file/156876#t=119.74,210.1
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70925/file/156876/transcript/88318/annotation/7
Speaker 5: According to the multiple listing service, home sales in Eugene increased almost 9 percent this February compared to last year. So at about quarter after one, a decision was made to shift into what we call a defensive attack to pull everyone out of the building and to begin fighting that fire from the outside. We know that at least in some parts of the buildings, the walls apparently are insulated with sawdust, which was not uncommon at the time the building was constructed. That accounts for that kind of persistent smoldering fire spread that we had going through the building throughout the evening. The worst case scenario would be that vertical spread of fire through the inside walls continues on up through the building. What we're trying to do at this point is to confine the fire to the lower part of the building, to basically confine where it is, but to do that in a safe manner.
