At the University of Oregon, Iranian students set up an information table and a series of teach-ins, which fueled the heated arguments raging on campus. Five Iranian students were asked to leave the country by immigration officials. Others made themselves scarce during immigration hearings. Iranians in this country who found themselves in disagreement with the Ayatollah Khomeini's warlike tactics got plenty of media coverage. The first of those reports, February 1st from a Kuwaiti newspaper, drew an immediate response from the State Department. Washington would hold off its threatened economic sanctions until it heard more. The weight proved fruitless. On the 100th day of captivity for the Americans, Muslim students at the University of Oregon held a celebration in honor of the one-year anniversary of the Ayatollah's revolution. There were panel discussions and films. April 8th, the U.S. Broke diplomatic relations with Iran and its representatives were ordered out of the country. On the 23rd of April, a clash between hostage wife Walipa Thompson and pro-Khomeini demonstrators on the university campus. The normally soft-spoken woman told the students in no uncertain terms to take care of their own country's problems before criticizing those of the US. Two days later, on April 25th, the disastrous rescue attempt. Bodies and multimillion dollar equipment left behind in the desert. It was the 175th day of captivity for the 52 Americans, and the Ayatollah minced no words about the failed effort. It was a foolish act, he said. Try it again, and the hostages die. And the outlaw leader, foreshadowing the results of the coming American election, said President Carter must give up his hope for re-election. But the American people disagreed with Khomeini. In our own local poll, 439 people agreed with the President's actions, 94 did not. In Springfield, 2,000 feet of yellow ribbon went around trees and lampposts as part of a national effort to show hostage support. It was a gesture older than the Civil War. A gift of hope from Americans who suddenly realized the value of their daily freedom to their brothers and sisters who had been deprived of it. On the day before the presidential election, the Iranian student militants turned their captives over to the government. That step was considered a key move toward a possible release. And on the 365th day of captivity, a service was held in Cottage Grove. With the cold weather on the East Coast, we're seeing some really high priced vegetables. I'll see you next time. Green peppers, over $1 a pound. Florida tomatoes, those that made it out past the freeze, $1 pound. Zucchini from Mexico, along with eggplant and cucumbers. These markets are affected also, over a dollar a pound for this merchandise. California markets aren't quite so bad. Broccoli, a little higher, $59.69 a pound, carrots, $0.30 to $0,40 a pound artichokes are good buy this week at $0 .50,$.60 a piece. Red cabbage, not too bad of a buy, but it's going up also. Higher price items, potatoes. Again, just like the peanut crop was very short, same thing with potatoes. High prices on potatoes. In terms of citrus now, we won't see too much effect on our oranges. We don't get Florida oranges. But the California oranges are starting to go up. You'll see higher prices on frozen orange juice. The county began this fiscal year with almost $3 million on cash reserve. The best they can hope to start next year with is a $400,000 cash carryover. To help balance next year's budget, staff has asked the board to look at four possible new taxes. One is the controversial real property transfer tax. The others would be an events admission tax, a tax on the net profits of local businesses and a gasoline tax. Together, those four taxes could realize $3 million of additional revenue. But as Administrator Morgan told the board, it will be hard to get any of those taxes past the local special interest groups. Even though Lane County's budget involves millions of dollars, it's a lot like your family's budget. Very simply, the county, like your family, can't afford to spend more money than it has coming in. Today, the County staff gave the board the best available information. Later, the board will have to make the hard choices. The Empire Tournament is a big tournament now, and with the Golden Bears. And it means a lot of kids will get rated nationally. And I'm hear to see what kind of talent they got. And plus, I am a coach for the Muhammad Boxing Club. I'm hearing to see how talent he has. Maybe some of the guys might be competing against some of my guys. So I'm just here to watch, see what's going on.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208#t=2804.99,2827.11
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208/transcript/86290/annotation/137
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208#t=2827.89,2829.65
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208/transcript/86290/annotation/138
Speaker 47: Well, I got my start back in Louisville, Kentucky. Just got back from sunny Florida, where actually the weather is colder there than it is here. And if you're a produce lover, you're going to be probably seeing red when you go down to your fruit and vegetable store to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables. And I'll tell you why. With the cold weather on the East Coast, we're seeing some really high-priced vegetables. Green peppers, over $1 a pound. Florida tomatoes, those that made it out past the freeze, $1 pound. Zucchini from Mexico, along with eggplant and cucumbers. These markets are affected also. Over a dollar a pound for this merchandise. California markets aren't quite so bad. Broccoli, a little higher, 59.69 a pound. Carrots, 30 to 40 cents a pound, artichokes, a good buy this week at 50, 60 cents a piece. Red cabbage, not too bad of a buy, but it's going up also. High price items, potatoes, again, just like the peanut crop was very short, same thing with potatoes. High prices on potatoes. In terms of citrus now. Now, we won't see too much effect on our oranges. We don't get Florida oranges, but the California oranges are starting to go up. You'll see higher prices on frozen orange juice. Last but not least, we've got some beautiful asparagus coming out of the Imperial Valley in California, but it's not cheap. It's $2 a pound. So all in all, you're going to look at some high-priced vegetables this week. And the trend will continue until weather conditions improve. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terrence Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208#t=2944.03,3026.93
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70264/file/156208/transcript/86290/annotation/145
Speaker 15: Oregonians cooperating to protect whales has been fighting eviction from their office for more than two years.
