Consequently, the Leeds and Rice entered into that picture and as we continued into the investigation, we managed to put this team's evidence or Leeds together with another piece and finally rice and lay became our focal point. One, two, three. Yes, sir. I think that the public in Eugene and in this area, and also in Corvallis, other areas that are interested in this wilderness area, will be activated to do something, to put some pressure on the Department of Agriculture. And I want to apply a pressure to them. I've pointed out to them that my experience is not just trivial, that I've had a lot of experience in this are, but this is my judgment. And that this is what I'm going to tell the people here, so that it will stir them to get the thing off the back burner and start doing something about it. Why are the current claims invalid? Because there is no deposit that is economically adequate there. In other words, they could not make a profit by mining that area, and they are only going to try and hold up the public and make the public buy them out. Unless we get a contest to declare those claims are invalid. I don't think the public's money ought to be spent to buy its own property. I don't think we're really dragging our feet. We have asked for some additional information and I consider it appropriate to go to the outside public in these kinds of cases where, in effect, I have conflicting expert advice. So I'm relying on an offer by Osberg, as a matter of fact, to put together a kind of a three-pronged package that will give us another position. From which we could possibly seek an administrative court hearing from the Bureau of Land Management. How do you feel about Mr. Berry's action today? Well, I think it's useful in keeping the whole matter in the public focus. And I don't object at all to the Secretary of Agriculture learning from the local level that these things are important and that perhaps will facilitate the priorities that are necessary to get my job done. Well, I'm very happy. We spent a great deal of time working on this assessment issue in about 12 to 15 months, and I'm just happy we finally got something to the council. What does this mean to the people out here? Well, for the people on Echo Hollow, it's going to result in perhaps a 20 percent saving on their street assessment. This is very important to them because many of the people are now paying, Are they still paying on their sewer assessments from the time they were annexed to the city? And then they had this added onto the top and it resulted in quite a load for them. Of it means about five hundred, between five and six hundred dollar savings. Do you think this is a more equitable method of financing for street assessment? Well, it's better than the other way, by quite a bit. What they started out with. Officers from various law enforcement agencies have arrested 17 persons three of them juveniles on secret indictments returned by the Lane County grand jury the indictments charged criminal activity and drugs a spokesman for the Lane county interagency Narcotic squad said amphetamines hashish LSD and marijuana were Confiscated in a series of raids Tuesday night and early this morning Eight adults were arrested in Eugene and six adults and three juveniles were arrested and cottage Grove The spokesman said the grand jury also issued other secret indictments of persons who have not yet been arrested. He did not say how many other indictments had been issued. At the Lane County Courthouse, this is George Shortus reporting for Action News. Well, I think that from a citizen's standpoint, what they may see more differently than in the past is that on matters of less serious concern, we will find that we will accept the information over the telephone as to the circumstances of the occurrence in lieu of sending an officer directly to the caller's home or business to receive this information. The The second modification that will probably be recognized by several members of the community is the discontinuing of the vacation check request that we've had in the past. And we will no longer be making the checks during the absence of the homeowner. We're suggesting in that case that that they get neighborhood involvement and that they they ask their neighbors to to look out for their property during their absence and we also feel that there are adequate private security agencies in the community that will also for a very nominal fee a fee less than it really costs the police department to provide that service to maintain a close watch on the property. So from now on, most complaints will be handled over the telephone instead of face-to-face with a police officer. Also civil matters and legal advice won't be police considerations any longer. These types of services will be referred to other agencies. Chief Allen says the reduced level of these personal services are unfortunate, but they're necessary if major crimes in the metropolitan area are to be curtailed. Thank you. Nobody can tell exactly what a low voter turnout will be. The art and the science of political elections is just not that precise. The way we have the campaign analyzed... Is that there are a group of voters on one hand who will vote for Wayne Morris under any conditions, whether he's 94 or 74 or 24, they'll vote for Wayne Morris. On the other poll, there is a group voters who will not vote for Wayne Morris or who are supporting me, they will not vote for him under any circumstances. These two polls of this polarization tend to cancel each other out and what's left is 25 to 40 percent of the people that are in between those two extreme positions and these are the people we're directing our campaign toward. For one thing Larry, I think people are finally discovering that Eugene has an airport and that we have satisfactory connections. I think you're aware that many people for many years have driven to Portland to take advantage of multiplicity of flights, more frequent schedules and so forth. And now that we 55 mile an hour speed limits and gas may not be so readily available, they're availing themselves of their local friendly neighborhood airport. And I think they're finding it very convenient. Is the increased number of passengers causing you any particular problems? There are times, Larry, when it gets a little crowded, and there are some times when we're wall-to-wall people in there, but I think things are going very well, considering that the loads that we're experiencing now were never anticipated at the time the terminal was built. Are there going to have to be expansions here? Undoubtedly, there will need to be expansion, and probably in the not too far distant future. Well, this year, the Oregon coaching staff wants to have the Oregon players stronger than they have ever been before. And what we have tried to do with this program is it is a three-phase program. Speed, quickness, everything incorporated into these weight programs so that we don't have near as many injuries and we have a lot stronger and faster ball club. You're going to make a difference on the field? I think that the Oregon team will be stronger this year and you'll make a great difference on the fields because I don't believe we'll have near as much injuries and the fans will see a lot harder hitting ball club How do the players respond to the weight training? Well, it was really a great pleasure for me to work with the fellas. They really grabbed hold of the program with a lot of enthusiasm. The workouts were just fantastic, and all the ball players got a lot of good out of the programs, I believe. Some of the ballplayers are carrying a lot more weight. Tim Layton, usually 205 during the off-season, now is up to 257. Now is that healthy? I believe that it is because the workouts that he has been going through have been twice as hard that he's ever done before and he has not lost any speed. So with this extra body weight and the speed also, boom, we're going to have a tough ball player there. Local athletes who have benefited from Phillips' program include 49er Dave Wilcox, Major League Baseball player Joe Liss, and outstanding Oregon State wrestler Greg Strobel, just to name a few. And Phillips says the fans will notice the difference when the mightier Oregon Ducks take the field this fall. At Austin Stadium for Action News, this is Ben Brannis reporting. Well, to find a good ball club, get some help from the big league clubs like the Giants and the Phillies to send some young players in. But most of all, I would like to round up some boys in this area that know how to play ball and has played some baseball and put them on our team. Just love to be able to do that. Last year's M's were a triple A league. Will a caliber of ball be good in the single A northwest league? Well, it won't be as good as AAA, we all know that, but it'll be a bunch of boys that are fighting for a baseball career and they'll give it everything they've got. Well, you've gotten, Lane County has gotten a lot of money for aging this year. At least at first glance, it looks like more money than last year, is it? And. There are more monies dollar-wise, if you just look at the dollar, but you have to remember the inflationary costs, and you have remember the fact that the cost of a senior's living goes up proportionately higher than a younger person, because those services that they have most need of are the things that increase in cost the most, such as food and medical services and housing. Is the federal government taking a bigger chunk out of the money on its way before it gets here? In a way, it's a federal government, but in a way it indirectly is a federal government, let's say it that way. We have to have an indirect cost to operate these programs through the Lane County Governmental Agency is what it actually is, and it's what we call an indirect cost. It's going to equal 17 percent on one of the programs and 20 percent on the others. The question really becomes a philosophical one, and that is should all of the that are allowed to a community for services go into services or should some of those dollars be actually utilized to operate programs and that's what we're talking about we're talking about supporting the Lane County structure the fiscal department and audit and finance and administrative costs that we have with our county commissioners and our total local governmental setup. And isn't it true that the Office of Management and Budget also takes out it's share? Well, no, the Office of Management and Budget is the one that allows those indirect charges. That's the way that runs. They give you $100,000 to do something for seniors. You're going to have some administrative costs for printing checks, to pay insurance, to pay other fringe benefits like vacation, sick leave, and all of that. That's going to come in conjunction with that. That comes... Out of that $100,000 as well as because you're part of a governmental agency, a local governmental agency, you have to pay the cost of operating that. This is our family home. I mean, it's our family. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. In a few billion dollars. Anyway, everybody do it. Okay, well.
