There's no wild fish left in there yet. We're still being controlled on that. So with those facts and figures in mind, that was put forth, sometime this is going to have to be taken up. And I think that sooner, the better. Money to put a man in legislation. And they decided it is what works. But with three times the amount being planted by aquaculture, I think in the very near future that we're going to have to look real hard at a buyback program to buy out aquaculture and get it back in the state's hands. The storm caused many coastal rivers to crest at or above flood stage, and here in Eugene even the Willamette was lapping over its banks. No serious flooding has been reported, although some homes in the Grants Pass and Rogue River areas were threatened by mudslides. Even though showers are forecast for the weekend, official river watchers in Portland they're predicting. But the floodwaters will begin dropping by Friday night. Eugene's Alton Baker Park was most definitely flooded, but every cloud has its own silver lining or so they say, and the rising water brought this great blue heron to the park for a fishing expedition. The bike paths and jogging trails were also underwater in some places, but that didn't stop this young lady. She simply doffed her running shoes and went for a barefoot stroll through the waterlogged park. Further down the Willamette, what were once islands disappeared from view, and even roads that once ran along the riverbanks found themselves submerged under the runoff. Over the last three years, the magazine has featured articles by such well-known writers as Hunter Thompson, Edward Abbey, and Ken Kesey. Somebody out there liked the idea because readership rose steadily to its current level of 60,000. Officially, the Magazine was editorially independent from its parent company. Thank you very much. But just who owned running was no secret to rival running shoe firms, so they never advertised in the magazine. Editor Paul Perry figures doing business with the competition would have tripled advertising revenue. And because the magazine used top-notch writers and photographers, it was expensive to produce. As a result, running never broke into the black under Nike ownership. In the April 1983 issue, a note from the editor clearly stated the magazine's association with Nike. One corporate official says the idea was to help the magazine with the company name. Some here in Eugene say the idea was to help the company with the magazine. That's a moot point now. And by the time the state's tanker truck pulled up at Blue Star Pond this morning, the faithful had gathered, bait and tackle at the ready, waiting with the patience only fishermen have for the release of 1,500 trout. Fossilologists Bob Hooton and Randy Winter say this is a little like playing Santa Claus, especially when they're delivering something as prized as rainbow trout. At the turn of the century, one of America's leading naturalists described the rainbow trout as being a fish of real beauty, comfortable size, and fine flavor, which is also easy to propagate. A little later, Hooten and Winters took another 1500 rainbow over to Fern Ridge. They were expected there as well. They dropped their payloads, slippery and sliding, flashing in the unexpected sunshine. Some of these first cousins to the salmon even tried to swim back into the truck, but to no avail. Then the fishers went to work, if you can call it that, And within ten minutes, the first rainbow was hooked. Merle Collins of Eugene didn't get too excited about it. After all, he says he's been wetting his line for 62 years. These fish are the first of 440,000 to be released in valley ponds this spring. They were raised to be caught. The ponds in which they're being planted don't have enough gravel or moving water for them to spawn, and they've been too pampered to survive a winter without being fed. So if you've got a fishing license, the state is hoping you'll catch your limit. The stocking program only lasts until May. The water gets too warm after that to continue it. But not to worry. By then, the stream trout season will have opened. The late Ben Hur Lampman, Oregon's poet laureate for 20 years, had an understanding of trout fishing that could only spring from a lifelong passion for it. He wrote, now the virtue of trout fishing is that it, of all pursuits, rewards the dreamer with the realization of his dream. The trout are more beautiful than he remembers, and the day, the scene, and the occupation are at harmony. And that, he said, is why men go trout fishing.
