Now they come to Oregon, and the drive-by is one of the highlights of the day. In a physical sense, it is as close as people will get to the Bogwan. Between 1974 and 1981, the Bogwan taught at Pune, a city about a hundred miles from Bombay. Even then he was fascinated with cars. He kept a Mercedes-Benz to drive him the 300 feet between his apartment and the adjoining lecture hall. These scenes are from a documentary made in those years when the Bogwan held daily teaching sessions, a discourse a day on everything from religion to sex to food, even jokes. The lectures were transcribed, and now they fill more than 300 books. In May of 1981, the Bogwan decided he had said enough. His lessons ended abruptly. He disbanded the ashram at Pune and moved to the United States. First to the East Coast and then to the 100 square mile Big Muddy Ranch near Antelope. This is as close as we were allowed to his new home in the shadow of a central Oregon mountain. Since he moved to Oregon last summer, the Bogwan has lived here in near total isolation. He speaks to his doctor, his nurse, his staff members, and to Sheila Silverman, the woman who oversees Rajneshi business. In Pune, the Bhwan himself would induct new disciples into the faith. In Oregon, that duty too has been passed on to others. Around the world, the religion claims a quarter of a million members. Another 1,000 are expected to join here at the festival. Each receives a mala, a necklace of 108 beads, and a picture of the Bhwan. And on the paper is the initiate's new name. Along with the change of clothes comes a name change. Each day of the festival, the believers will meditate with the Bhagwan in a ceremony called Satzang. They assemble by the thousands to wait in a two-acre meeting hall. The Bhwan arrives, they bow, and then close their eyes for an hour-long service. Music is played, and there are readings from the Bhagwan's teachings. Satsang is described as a heart-to-heart commune with the Bhagwan. A lot of workers were on two and three-day work weeks, and companies unilaterally slashed wages by 20% or more. The stock market crashed, and many who had been rich became poor.
