She lived there two years by herself and then another year after she was married. She met Bern Ikeler in August. They had a short courtship and fell in love. She got married Dec. 27, 1946. She had much in common with her husband. They went to Trenton for their honeymoon overnight. She became pregnant in September, 1947. Bern was teaching at New Hope High. Ruth stayed at home. She had a lovely pregnancy. The baby was born in April. Ruth went into labor on April 3. The baby was a boy and they named him Eric Eves Ikeler. The doctor was a resident. There was pneumonia in the hospital. A few days later the baby felt hot and caught pneumonia. Eric was taken to another hospital. A thoughtless nurse came to Ruth’s bed to bind her breasts and told her she would never nurse her baby. Bern came in the next day to tell her Eric had died. Ruth was devastated. When Ruth got home, the apartment was completely cleared of the baby’s clothes and furniture. Ruth talks about the next few weeks after Eric’s death. Ruth and Bern buy a house in Lambertville for $800 in 1948. Ruth describes the house and area where they bought the house. Ruth grieves a long time after the death of Eric. Someone gives her a kitten, which helps her out of her depression. When she was pregnant with Eric, Ruth started writing for the Bucks County magazine. Around the same time that her child died, Ruth’s father had a heart attack and had to quit his job at the post office. Ruth’s mother had to take care of him. He lived 12 more years. Ruth’s mother died 3 years before he did. Ruth published a book of poetry while she was a teacher. Florence was a very important friend to Ruth for 20 years. Ruth loved Florence very deeply. She was 20 years older than Ruth. Ruth was 25 and Florence was 45. They shared their writing with each other. Ruth published Florence’s story in the magazine. Ruth puts out mimeographed copies of a poetry magazine and sells it at the bookstore for 5 cents a copy. Ruth was pregnant again. Bern got jealous of Ruth’s poetry magazine. Ruth says she should have known those rages would reoccur. Ruth felt she had all the training to be a battered wife, because she was battered by her father. Her son Kim was born in August of the next year. In August of the year before, Bern rapes Ruth. Ruth publishes a poem, For Those Who Can’t Sleep. Ruth talks about Kim’s birth again. Kim was nearly two when Jeff was born. Bern and Ruth have terrific sex. Ruth talks about Jeff’s birth. Ruth begins writing a column for the Bucks County Traveler. Ruth writes an article for a baby magazine. Florence moves to Lambertville. Jeff is 8 months old and she has to stop nursing him because she finds out she is 3 months pregnant. David is born. Ruth begins driving at 32 or 33 years of age. Ruth talks about Bucks County workshops. Bucks County is famous for its artists, playwrights, producers and writers. Many artists had homes there because it was close to New York City.
