He didn't tell our fellow work in Tacoma when he was going to school last year. And he's been following for some times down here. I just didn't feel he took unnecessary chances in anything he did. The McKinsey Flying Service is one of several places in the county that rents airplanes. It was yesterday that 24-year-old Corey Kenneth Carlson rented a Cessna 150, very similar to this one, but he never returned. The plane is equipped with a radio and an emergency locator transmitter, but neither of them were activated. I think it started in the attic. I don't know, maybe it's because I built a fire. I just burnt some papers up with a little bit of wood. I don't know what happened. Who else was inside with you? My brother-in-law and sister-in law. Little kid. Period of time in our history existed when it was illegal to teach evolution in some parts of the country, and so there was an imbalance in education. Only the creation view was actually legal to be taught. But we have gone through a change in our society where it has gone exactly to the opposite extreme and it has become illegal in a lot of places to teach creation as opposed to evolution. So I think that was a very instrumental in our getting off to a good start this year. We also resurfaced, re-turfed the infield last fall. And of course, if you saw the games last weekend, we're getting true bounces for a change, which makes it nicer for the infielders instead of like the previous several years. If we were offering classes in comparative religions or in a comparative class in the origin of the species, there would be absolutely no problem. But the issue is not in classes such as that. The issue is in science classes. And I would doubt very much that a balanced point of view such as the one Mr. Fox espouses could be presented. Lastly, you can see the valve cover and the... We did get a little rain this morning, which helped, but if it clears off and goes back to the real hot weather, we may still be finding fires a week from now that we haven't spotted now that haven't cleared up. So we're just going to have to watch it now and maybe we'll get a rain, we hope. The agency, which now I think is very fortunate in having skilled and knowledgeable scientists working in this area, will lose them and in their place we will have to proceed to arrange with universities and private research institutions to do this important phase of work. Well we've got our fingers crossed and they said as soon as the sun shines we're going and of course we've got the infield area to do and and Henry the head man here says we're not holding up or anything we're gone for broke and today's the first day any of us are smiling for about a week now so it looks good at this point what they're doing it sets up in about a half hour before they start pouring the sand that you're seeing back there right now and it'll it says about like and then you put the sand on it. And then 12 hours later, they'll be able to get on it. And then they put a sealer on top of it, which is just a real light coat of sealer to hold everything down. Oh no, no, it took me about one year just to be able to sit up in it and not fall out. The way you get started is people push you out and say paddle, because if you're paddling with a paddle, if you are moving you're a little bit more stable. That took a long time, that was real hard. And then once you're able to sit in it. And not fall out, you have to be able to then learn how to apply pressure and apply power on the paddle. And that took another probably seven months before I could really put any power on the paddle at all. And then modifying that once you can go fast, then you have to, of course, tune your technique so that you're... Going as fast as you possibly can, you're up to your potential. Why have you been drawn to this particular story, what do you get out of it? Well, there's a day-to-day satisfaction, I guess. Training is real important to me. I like to train. But in December, it's pretty hard to think about goals for next June. So you have to think of goals from week to week. It's a sport that's a unique one. There's some esthetic pleasure in paddling on open water, reservoirs and lakes, and the fitness is also real important. I like being strong and I like fast on the water. I like to be fit, I guess. And the value of the training camp is way too... Oh, the training camp is real important for me. Because the sport's so underdeveloped, it's really hard for me to find people to race against. And I can do all the training I want to and be about as good as I can, but I need the competition real badly. And the training camps in Florida is crucial, really, to, I think, my success in making the team. The very best paddlers in the country will be there from all over the country. It'll be a real big camp and it'll be very intense. Training on the water at least twice a day and a lot of weights and a lot of running and it will be very competitive. We'll be racing throughout all of our workouts and I need that very badly right now. When you compete in this sport. The big things that people train for in this sport are making the Olympic team and making world championship teams. There's very little, there's no racing of this type of craft anywhere in Oregon. There are training camps at Colorado Springs, there is the National Sports Festival now and there's a training camp at Squaw Valley periodically, but in order for me to travel to race, I have to go. Either to San Francisco or Los Angeles, so that's about a thousand miles for a 500 meter sprint. So I need the chance, I guess, to race against people on a regular basis. I'd have to go a long ways in order to race in my sport, I guess. There's marathon canoeing, which I also do. But that's not the same as paddling an Olympic kayak. It's a real solitary sport because it's such an underdeveloped sport and there's nobody else around here to race with. You don't have all the social aspects like you have when you're in swimming or running or something like that. You don't have someone coming up to you and saying, wow that was a rough workout wasn't it? Or, gee you did well today, you're all by yourself. Yep. Oh yeah, it's good sometimes. It gets pretty old after about five months of it, just like that. It's got its benefits, surely, but it also, you know, I guess I like training alone, or else I wouldn't be in this sport. It's not a social sport.
