United States senators spend most of their working lives here working for you. What does a United States senator do for you each day in Washington, D.C.? How does he earn the trust you give him? When Moise's day begins, perhaps like any Oregonian with his wife and the morning reading. But the paper is the Congressional Record first. Get that read. Good. Because what happened yesterday on the Senate floor will affect people tomorrow in Baker or Gold Beach, Paris, France. Or Paris Georges. His post breakfast reading done. When Miles goes to work in an overcoat like yours. In a car like yours. What do a job that's different? The government of the United States of America. Thinking about the day's schedule, meetings, committee hearings, debates when Morse officially starts his day, perhaps like you in his office. But his day will be different to gathering facts for a civil rights bill. He will co-sponsor a foreign aid bill he wants to defeat. And also, perhaps, like you, Senator Morse of Oregon finds the hours too short. He's due in another building to conduct a committee hearing. Much of the senator's work is done inside a committee room. But what happens there and what happens later on the Senate floor depends largely on how well a senator has done his homework for 23 years. When Morse has done his homework very well as Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield attests, way to do the fact that Senator Mr. Hill of Alabama has announced his retirement. That means, of course, that you will become the chairman of the Committee on Labor and Education. I personally think that a better choice could not be made than you. But that's just one way not served on many vital committees and subcommittees on projects like food, not military aid, but food for children in Latin America. Air, Fresh Air or children in Oregon. And Water Oregon's Life. Blood. Water. We drink it, irrigate crops with it, we wash cars and take thousands, and we take it for granted. But Senator Morse doesn't. For 23 years, Wayne Morse has worked to conserve and harness Oregon's water, to build dams, to light our cities and give us the image on this television. Morse of Oregon doesn't take water for granted or power or schools or hospitals or jobs. Wayne Morse of Oregon cares enough that his workday extends into night. There are still letters to be read and answered, fact to be studied and understood. Plans to be made for tomorrow's workday. Tomorrow's hearing. Tomorrow's world. Briefcase packed with the inevitable homework. Then to do more things about tomorrow. He thinks about the other 99 senators who, with him, share responsibility for this nation's tomorrow. And his fellow lawmakers like Maryland Senator Joseph Tatum. Think about him. One of the things that many of us admire about Senator Moore is that he's completely independent and he calls the shots in a way. He's a man, of course, and a public servant. That is the highest commendation. And Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, certainly on that committee. And in the Senate, you're known as the senator who leads these fights on on education. And Senator Albert Gore of Tennessee weigh when you're not just a senator, you are tradition. We all need way more time.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141367/file/261355#t=13.27,269.34
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141367/file/261355/transcript/76191/annotation/2
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141367/file/261355#t=269.86,271.03
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141367/file/261355/transcript/76191
["English [Transcript]
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141367/file/261355/transcript/76191/annotation/3
https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/076/191/original/trint_001-24-162_transcript.vtt?1740082142
text/vtt
en
https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/076/191/original/trint_001-24-162_transcript.vtt?1740082142"}]}]}]}
