They never made it. The two 11-year-olds were reported missing shortly after dusk. Police officers and the girls' fathers joined in an intensive hunt for the duo. That evening, Rachel Iser's nude and badly bruised body was found here in the press box at the Southern Oregon football stadium. It was discovered by Deanna's father. An autopsy later revealed that Isser had been sexually molested and strangled with a piece of carpeting. The search intensified. Police dogs were called in to help comb the area in the hopes of finding Deanna alive. It was not until the next afternoon that the young girl's body was discovered in a wooded section about five miles east of town. She too had been sexually assaulted. Police say she'd been alive until just hours before her body was located. Death came from suffocation. The news paralyzed this small town. Police sent out pleas for help from anyone who may have been at the stadium around the time of the crime. Joggers at the field provided lawmen with four composite drawings. A man who was sitting in the stands when the two girls disappeared. This blood-stained quilt provided the first big break in the case. It was found near one of the bodies. After the release of the quilt's picture, police received a phone call from a man, who fingered a suspect. On January 4th, eight days after the girls vanished, an arrest warrant was issued for 24-year-old Manuel Cortez. The migrant laborer had apparently lived in this Ashland duplex for four to six weeks. Police learned he had since gone Los Angeles, where he was picked up and arrested on January 5th. Already wanted in Oregon, Cortez was also charged in California in a two-year-old kidnapping case. So it was not until a month later that Oregon authorities were able to extradite him. Bob Weber, one of Cortez's court-appointed attorneys, successfully requested that the trial be moved because of prejudicial publicity in the Ashland area. Cortez, was transferred to the Lane County jail this Wednesday. There he waits for the next chapter in this drama to unfold.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70213/file/156156#t=589.61,701.45
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70213/file/156156/transcript/86307/annotation/36
Speaker 20: We'll have all patrols in view and both aircraft using traffic enforcement throughout the state.
