Now, in a suit initiated by the state of Oregon, that right was upheld by the Supreme Court. Mr. Rosen and I attempted to register at Lane County Board of Elections last week, but we were refused because we aren't 21. Now, this is in spite of the fact that we legally qualify for registration under the federal law. The reason for the refusal was a directive from the Secretary of State in which he stated in which she ordered the local board not to register anyone unless they were 21 years old. He is also violating the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which provides for equal protection under the law. The Republican leaders of Oregon are very quick to act regarding actions of a few people. As can be seen by last summer's call of thousands of national guardsmen to quell disturbances which never materialized. But when confronted by the majority of young people who want to work within the established legal process, these same state leaders devise stalling tactics to prevent them. We have used as pretty much of a base for our own state guidelines, the guidelines that have been developed around the federal law, which has had since 1964 to build up some experience in this line. Some of the cases that are currently under consideration, some of the more important ones involve the equal pay classification, which also involves different job classifications for the same kind of work. Which is quite common, and maternity leave policies, which is another very important one. Yes, we are. Occasionally, a man is in a situation where, well, in the recession period we're in now, for instance, two things, contradictory things, are happening. A man may be fired in order that the employer may hire a woman, usually at a lower wage. Since women are usually available at lower rates of pay, women are being hired more prominently than men sometimes. On the other hand, since men, more men are available with the kinds of skills that an employer may need, sometimes since they are more available, he can get rid of the women he didn't want as badly and hire a man. It does not preclude timber cutting, but the timber cutting would have to be in accordance with the established land use objective.
