For only slightly more, the Loveless may have the tastiest assortment. You can have, or can have, salty country ham with red eye gravy, fried chicken livers, hot biscuits, homemade preserves, and it's great. Well worth the 15-minute drive from downtown Nashville. Those preserves are for sale. Mario's is local legend. Dinners are $20 to $25, but the food is really very good. The wine selection is one of the best in town. Its French counterpart is Julian's, unassuming on the outside, but again, very good food. For a less expensive meal, hit the stockyard, mainly steaks. If the corner soda fountain is what you're looking for, definitely try Elliston's Place. Avoid peak hours, it's busy. Haptown's is not much to look at, but no ties and no pretense. For all you independent shoppers, let's take a look and see what you can expect to find this week in the produce department. The weather gets nice, it'll be a good week for picnic and melons are outstanding this week. Watermelons running anywhere from 10 to 16 cents a pound. Cantaloupe and honeydew melons, 29 to 49 cents a pound. Very, very good quality. Other tree fruit out of California. Peaches, plums, nectarines, grapes, they're not a tree fruit. Grapes all coming in very nice now. Prices are running a little higher this week, but the quality is there. Locally, bing cherries coming in now. A smaller cherry crop this year, cherries are running about a dollar a pound. Bing, I guess they named me after Bing Crosby or something like that. Bing cherry is very good right now though. Local strawberries season's just about over. The strawberries are getting a little waterlogged. I wonder why. You might taste your strawberries before you buy them. The water logging causes them to get a little bit of sourness to the berries. Season's just about over. Raspberries will be coming out next week. It was a good year. You might check and see if there's any more local berries. They might be just about finished. Over in the vegetable department, a lot of things coming in locally, all very reasonably priced. Broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce of all kinds, zucchini, yellow squash, green beans, fresh peas, snow peas. I'm running out of breath. Cucumbers, all coming in. Very good quality and very, very reasonably priced. It's a good week for local vegetables. The corn on the markets out of California, it's going to be three or four or five years for a dollar. The quality is only so so. Highest price item this week vegetables, tomatoes, once again out of California. They're still running close to a dollar a pound, but I will remind you the quality is very good. They do taste like tomatoes. So all in all, it's a real good week. Have a good holiday, drive safely.
