Our stuff comes from farther away. Among the higher priced items this week, celery is high as 49 cents a pound. Green peppers, sometimes over a dollar a pound, zucchini now, 79, 69, 89 cents a pounds. Eggplant, very difficult to find. And very difficult to find a good one, also, as high as $1 apiece. Tomatoes, hanging in there, there are some good buys on tomatoes, as a matter of fact. California tomatoes are still in good supply. Good buys this week. Artichokes out of California, at $0.59 or $0,69 apiece, right now, that's a good buy. And lettuce, of all kinds, still very reasonably priced. But watch out, because in a week or two, lettuce prices should be going up. Looking over at the fruit market, Here's some good news and some bad news. Avocados coming in now, Zutano avocados, very cheap, four, five, six, seven for a dollar. Not much flavor, but once again, they are cheap. Bananas, higher price this week, as much as 49 cents a pound. Why, you ask? Well, there's no other soft fruit on the market. Goodbys this week. Apples, pears, grapefruit out of Texas, all very good buy. Citrus now, here's the difference. Here's a Valencia orange. Notice the color, the thinner skin, deep color, very good juice. Look at the navel. Thicker skin, very pale. What does this mean? It means your navels are going to be a lot tartar and a lot less juicy. They're going to run about, oh, $0.30,$.40 a pound. Prices on navel will be coming down. Good supply of nuts still available. Cranberries, that's our big joke. Do you have any fresh cranberries? No way. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terence Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70254/file/156198#t=769.35,877.7
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70254/file/156198/transcript/86270/annotation/31
Speaker 19: Related to place, case, and information. Sacred Heart has had two rate hikes in the last year, one for 12%, the other 10.9%. Mackenzie Willamette and the Eugene Hospital and Clinic have both up their rates once. That puts the average stay for one day in the hospital at over $300. Dollars. Hospitals say they can justify the expense, but patients receiving bills that itemize down to every aspirin may wonder over charges such as a dollar for a band-aid and $14 for a disposable gown that wholesales for $175. Hospitals says that's the cost of providing those services, but it's a cost you can afford. Yeah, it's been a little shaky. Insurance is really a double-edged sword. On one hand, few of us could afford today's health expenses without some kind of coverage. On the other hand, third-party payers can drive up costs by encouraging people to use health care when they don't really need to. More on that later. Partially because of new patients flooding the health care system, but Medicare critics say the jump was also caused by legislative loopholes.
