The eruption of St. Helens renewed scientific interest in what's going on beneath the ground of the Pacific Northwest. Scientists know that two huge pieces of the Earth's crust collide along the northwest coast. It's called a subduction zone because one of the pieces, or plates as scientists call them, is slipping underneath the other. The volcanoes of the Cascades are probably a result of that activity. In fact, one of the mysteries scientists are trying to solve is why Oregon is so much quieter than its neighbors to the north and south. If a major earthquake was to hit Oregon, it probably would not be centered in the Willamette Valley. The western side of the coast range would probably get shaken the hardest. Although the precautions are nothing compared to those taken along the California coast, all buildings in the state are required to be moderately earthquake-proof.
