Not as much fire, but lots of smoke, almost impossible to get inside the building. So it was an operation that went what we would call defensive very early on. What we have is a wall between Hirons and the Safeways Store. No one at the scene is familiar with the integrity of that wall, not knowing what the codes were at the time of construction. At this point we have lines plugged into the sprinkler system in the Safeway Store, which is not yet activated. We have crews on the roof on the parapet wall. We have water towers in place and lines from outside. Best outcome we can hope for is to basically confine the fire to hybrids and keep it from outside the Safeways Store. Fourteen months, the bargaining over the district's contract with the teachers union has been alternately heated, then deadlocked, and more importantly, overshadowed more by perceptions than by facts. There are those on the district side who believe the union has been planning this strike for months, has never seriously bargained, and had no intention of attempting a settlement Tuesday night. These same people believe the state teachers union, the OEA, has choreographed the labor strife not only in Eugene, but in Coos Bay and Ashland and elsewhere throughout the state, as a show of strength of organized labor in Oregon. Conversely, many union members feel the district is out to break their local, if not to destroy it, at least to strip it of its clout. They see district negotiator Steve Goldschmidt as the point man in the drive. A person they say is arrogant and backed by a hardline bargaining team out only to win at the table. Regardless of whether any of this is true, the two sides' perceptions are constant factors in these talks, talks that are frequently more of a clash of personalities and bargaining styles than of issues themselves. And that does not bode well as the district and union bargainers prepare to return to the table against the backdrop of a strike. Despite some tangible progress early last weekend, negotiations bogged down in a mire of bargaining tactics and missteps, making it difficult to say whether the urge to end the walkout and reach an equitable settlement will be the key factors going into the next round of talks. Tracy Berry, Eyewitness News. As the two sides entered the session shortly after one Sunday afternoon, their first priority was to try to hammer out a solution to the deadlock over insurance, then attempt to soften up their stances on some of the other key contract issues. But by 2 this morning, it was clear not much progress was being made. Mediator John Vail says the two-sides remain miles apart on the insurance issue despite hours of discussion.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71109/file/157060#t=2074.19,2209.81
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71109/file/157060/transcript/88516/annotation/107
Speaker 35: They can get closer, but the parties are going to have to make that movement.
