That's when the Klamath County Humane Society stepped in and counted more than 10,000 cattle stranded on pasture covered with ice and snow. The herd doesn't belong to any Klamath County ranchers. It's owned by John Casey, a 69-year-old Reno Nevada rancher who has large herds in five different western states. The Humane Society found that small amounts of stale straw were being fed to the cattle, and many drowned in canals trying to get water. There's a shortage of cattle feed in Klamath County, and the worst of winter's weather has yet to hit. The Humane Society wants to see these starving cattle moved out fast. Some of the pasture land here, at least by Casey, is under foreclosure by either banks or insurance companies. Casey has been cited by the sheriff to move his livestock out of Klamath County. It's costing the financially strapped Humane Society $6,000 a day to feed the cattle. Area ranchers are helping with delivery of fresh feed. While Casey has put up some money, no one knows how many more cattle will starve before feed and time run out.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70881/file/156832#t=8.49,72.19
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70881/file/156832/transcript/87716/annotation/2
Speaker 3: Don't get out of here and we get some more storms that we just have no idea of how we could possibly be able to finance the feeding operation here unless we have a hundred percent cooperation out of John Casey.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70881/file/156832#t=74.49,87.45
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70881/file/156832/transcript/87716/annotation/3
Speaker 1: One rancher counted more than one hundred dead cattle in a two-day period this week.
