They started the first issue of WomanSpirit magazine from a donation of $1,000 from Barbara Altar. They collected submissions from women living on other women’s lands. They thought of themselves as a collection place for women’s thoughts, views, talents, etc. It was a place where women could speak their minds. WomanSpirit magazine would last 10 years. At first they had women printers, then they switched to commercial printers. Ruth talks about WomanSpirit magazine. Ruth sings a song about Carol Newhouse called, Carol in the Morning. Ruth talks more about the magazine. Ruth sings songs about being a romantic. Ruth says more about the magazine. Jean wants to have a festival in the local forest. They call it the Siskiyou WomanSpirit Festival. It lasted 6 days and cost $10.00. Tory and Billie Jo (who now goes by Billie) become lovers. Ruth talks more about the festival. Ruth and Jean are living at Golden. They have a garden. They work on the inside and outside of the cabin. Ruth builds a darkroom at Golden. Ruth has her songbook published. The men at Golden encouraged Ruth and Jean to establish a small office in the barn. Ruth talks about a book she published and wrote the poetry for, in 1977, called For Those Who Cannot Sleep. It was illustrated by a woman named Christos. Ruth reads a poem from the book. Ruth talks about all the women she has met. She talks about her and Jean’s creative energy together. There were so many great meetings about WomanSpirit at Golden and then later at Rootworks. At Rootworks, women were asked to contribute $3.00 a day for food and contribute 2 hours of work a day. Ruth describes life at Rootworks. She talks about the success of WomanSpirit. Ruth sees Heather, Jeff and Kim in Denver, CO. on a trip back from the east coast. Ruth talks about her children. Things are going well between Ruth and Jean.
