This week, we're going to learn a little bit about citrus. Oranges have been around for thousands of years. They were originally grown in China. Now, most people think that there's two kinds of oranges, which there are. But most people believe that you've got your valencias and your navels. But your valancias and navel are both the same kind of oranges. They're both sweet oranges. The two kinds or oranges that there are are the sweet oranges and the bitter oranges, like a Seville orange. Now, bitter oranges like Seville oranges also used in making marmalade or ducla orange. You don't see very many bitter oranges. Mostly what we get are the sweet oranges. This time of year, we're into the navel orange season. Now, a navel is an orange that has a thicker skin, a little bit more membrane, no seeds. It's not as good for juicing, but it's an excellent eating orange. Most of the naver oranges that we get are out of California, and they're running according to size anywhere from 29 to 59 cents a pound. Very good right now. Now, we've got a lot of orange and tangerine-type mixtures. We've got the mandarin oranges, the royal temple mandarin on the market right now. They're a cross between an orange and a tangerin. They do have seeds. They're in a little tart right now, they're running about $0.69 a pound. They will get sweeter as the season progresses. A new citrus and a very good citrus on the marker right now are the clementine tangerines out of Morocco. You can see they have a little Morocco sticker here. They are seedless, like the satsuma tangerins. They don't have a zip skin, but they're excellent right now. They're very, very sweet. They're called clementines. All oranges contain a lot of vitamin C. That's very good. You need a lot vitamin C this time of the year. One thing you want to remember, they don't ripen after they're picked. So everything, oranges, tangerines, are all tree-ripened. Aren't you glad you learned about oranges this week? Revenues from the trees harvested on the properties are divided between the federal government and the counties through a complicated allocation formula. The dividends provide the backbone of the Lane County budget. And when timber receipts are down, so are the monies available for the county budgets. The numbers fluctuate widely from year to year. In the 1980-81 budget cycle, Lane County pocketed close to $15 million in ONC revenues. As the recession hit home, timber harvest stalled. So did the checks from the properties. The figures recovered a bit this past year, but Ray Dorner, the executive director of the ONC county, has told us tonight that the latest estimates show a 15% to 20% drop in timber revenues for fiscal year 84-85, and Lane County officials think that could mean up to a $2 million loss. Only about $8 million total in next year's ONC profits. Dorner attributes that loss to a drop in average stumpage prices. But he says forecasts could improve in the next few months if the lower stumpage prices turn into increased overall harvests. And one other advantage of the falling prices, according to Dorner, could be increased operations in mills, meaning increased employment. Still, that doesn't help Lane County budgeters. They'll be in for some bloody cuts if the latest estimates hold true. Michael Lissy didn't want Catherine Martini Lissy to find out he never graduated from Harvard or served as an ambassador to a foreign country. His mother said, if certain things came up, he asked me not to expose him. She told Michael if he was going to lie about being an ambassador from an African country he should learn how to spell ambassador. Prosecutor Brian Barnes asked Mrs. Lissy if she had lied for her son to protect him. She said, yes, and I have. Just before Michael Lissy was arrested, his mother says he told her his worst fear was that he was involved. He said if anything he had said was responsible for Catherine's death, he would never forgive himself. The father that adopted Michael 11 years ago says he formulated the opinion long ago that his son was a liar and that he is trying to establish a life he never had among his peers, including Catherine Martini Lissy. The changes in 1985 are both good and bad. First, the good news. Because of something called indexation, federal taxes will be cut. Indexing should trim the fat from that situation. Don't spend those extra pennies, though. Uncle Sam wants them back. The Social Security tax will increase this year. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70854/file/156805#t=2922.88,3027.07"},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70854/file/156805/transcript/89991/annotation/253","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"\u003cstrong\u003eSpeaker 46:\u003c/strong\u003e Account for each dollar on the tax bill, and the tax board judge says, abstract says, collected men validated.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70854/file/156805#t=3047.4,3053.1"},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70854/file/156805/transcript/89991/annotation/254","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"\u003cstrong\u003eSpeaker 47:\u003c/strong\u003e I worked very hard with the commissioners in developing their response to the district's demand letter.
