And hey, who says these guys aren't ready to play? Nearly 4,000 fans huddled on the Oats and Roof, hoping to stay dry. Down below, the alums were fired up. And what they lacked in conditioning, they made up for with Curry. Right away, they got a firsthand look at the new tailback they'd been hearing about. On the varsity's second possession, Reggie Brown slashed for 12 yards and the first down of the Alumni 20. Hey, they say, how come we had nobody like this? Three plays later, Brown got the ball with the eighth. Dan, look at him go into the end zone for a touchdown. Doug Jollymore's point after made it 7-0. On the sidelines, the vets were making some defensive adjustments. Who's that number 10 quarterback for the alumni? Isn't it Harvey Nguyen? Sure is. And Harvey, meet Gordon Bledsoe, the guy who'll take Kerry Dion's place, a defensive end. I think Harvey's lost a step. The alums had their moments on defense, too. They stacked up varsity tailback Charlie Bichard on this play, but later he was to gain 77 yards and score two touchdowns, one on a 45-yard run. By the time the second half rolled around, the Varsity had things pretty much in hand. Brown and Bechard were both impressive. Even a broken play turned into a varsity touchdown. And when it was all over, the board read 41 to 7. The alums only score came on a Steve Brown 100-yard kickoff return. This is Rick Meda reporting for Eyewitness Sports.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144#t=17.16,89.48
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144/transcript/86198/annotation/2
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144#t=108.96,109.66
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144/transcript/86198/annotation/3
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144#t=111.41,111.65
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144/transcript/86198/annotation/4
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144#t=114.12,114.12
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144/transcript/86198/annotation/5
Speaker 4: When scouts open that up 50 years from now, what do you think they'll think about what it was like today?
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144#t=121.91,125.93
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70201/file/156144/transcript/86198/annotation/6
Speaker 3: I don't have any idea. Why? Most of it is late due to the rain that we had in January and February down there. So we're seeing a lot of higher prices on most of our vegetables coming from Southern California. Among the items affected right now are cucumbers, which are as high as $0.80 a pound, cauliflower, as high $1 a pound. Green peppers, over $1.00 a pound celery, around $0 .70 a bunch. And lettuce and artichokes, all higher than normal right now. Even worse than that, the California tomato crop isn't ready, and we're forced to use Florida tomatoes, which are expensive and tasteless, in my opinion. The good news this week is that local produce is coming on a little bit more every day. We're starting to get some beautiful local spinach in, very nice radishes and green onions, very reasonably priced. Washington asparagus starting to come in now. And local rhubarb also coming in as low as 30 cents a pound. Your best buys this week in the fruit department would be California strawberries, as low 60 cents a basket and lower. In the vegetable department, white potatoes, as low 15 cents a pounds. Your worst buy this week in the food department would be bananas. E-web burns this hog fuel at their steam generating plant that pipes into various businesses to be used for heat. With so many fuels shut down, the waste is scarce. What little is being salvaged is usually sold to the paper products industry for pulp. It's first time in 17 years the situation has been this critical. Fulmar wants to reduce taxes and yet balance the budget using the private sector to provide solutions if necessary. Bob Griffith works as a civil engineer for the county. Griffith says he would seek innovative ways to alter our current welfare system so as to demand that every able-bodied citizen of Lane County be required to earn his or her keep. Wooten urges more intergovernmental cooperation in economic development planning with a goal of regional self-sufficiency in energy and food production.
