Under the plan approved by the State Insurance Commissioner last Thursday, SAFE premiums will drop by an average of 12.4%, resulting in a $12 million savings for Oregon employees. The reduction is made possible through a precedent-setting plan. Rates will be reduced to a point where SAFE will actually be operating at an underwriting loss. That is, money collected from the reduced SAFE premiums will be insufficient to cover expenses. To make up the difference, SAFE will utilize money from its sizable investments, essentially subsidizing rates through investment income. In making the announcement today, SAFe officials said the reduction of worker compensation rates means the average rate level for SAFE Corporation is now less than half of what it was in 1980. SAFE manager Ralph Faulkner says the decision to reduce premiums was made strictly on the basis of providing lower insurance rates and without regard to political considerations, of reference to the legislative task force investigating SAFE, which holds its final meeting this week. The Valley River center partnership has been sold by owners Andy Anderson and Joe Fott, and the buyers, Grosvenor International of California, a subsidiary of Grosvner International Vancouver, British Columbia, an arm of the Grosvenor International Holdings Limited. Of London, England. Grosvenor owns and manages property throughout the world, including England, Australia, Canada, Texas, California, Washington, Missouri, Illinois, and Hawaii. The massive Grosvner estate in London is 300 acres of high rent and history that houses embassies for the US, Canada and over 20 other countries. Well, what does this all mean to Eugene? Valley River Center manager Dick Hanson says the center will continue to be operated by the same management and that retailers should notice little difference. I'm gonna tell you about produce selection. I really believe that your end results of your meal has something to do with what you put into it. So, I am gonna help you select good produce. This week, we're gonna concentrate on vegetables. Let's take a look. Okay, and lettuce. You wanna make sure your head is nice and firm, fairly solid, good weight, no rust around it, good head of lettuce, okay? Broccoli and cauliflower. Broccoli. You want your buds to be nice and tight. You don't want to see any yellow or black, for that matter. And your stalks, not too thick. Now, you can eat the stalks. They can be peeled, and you can cook them. Or you can use them as a soup stock. They're really wonderful. So a thick stalk doesn't necessarily bad, but it is better to have thin stalks Cauliflower, you want to have a nice, firm head. Carrots, again, nice color. When your carrot starts to get old, you can see this one here, the tip starts to rot. That's where they go bad first. Peppers, nice solid firm green pepper. Again, look around the stem for soft spots. That's where they occur. Finally, avocados. The most interesting fact about avocado is that the pit on a small avocado is going to be the same size as a pit on the large avocado. Strange, but true. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. So always buy large avocatos. You get more for your money. So I've helped you with this week's meal. Next week I'm going to tell you about selecting fruit. For Eyewitness News...
