The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is now looking into that purchase to see if any violations of federal law occurred. The possible problem is whether the guns were ordered through the district attorney's office but intended for private use. The Idaho distributor who shipped the guns today told us. He has talked with federal officials about the case, but because of the controversy, he now says he won't respond to any questions unless they're sent to him in writing. Doctors in both clinics must be licensed, and neither course of study is easy. At Kyunghee, 120 students are pursuing the six-year degree in traditional medicine. The courses range from anatomy to herbology. The Kyunghee Oriental Medicine Clinic treats about 500 patients per day. Western-style doctors in Korea will recommend it for treatment of arthritis, partial paralysis, and even cancer. In Oregon, acupuncture is the only aspect of oriential medicine that has any official recognition at all. There are about 15 licensed acupuncturists in the state, and patients may get referrals from licensed doctors, but only if they ask. In Korea, traditional medicine has entered the electronic age. This machine is used to measure pulse waves. It's considered a valuable diagnostic technique. Families that can afford it will usually have at least one oriental checkup per year. Traditional medicine is based on the assumption that there are opposing forces within the body. When those forces get out of balance, it causes illness. The checkup measures those forces along invisible lines of communication called meridians. In this case, I was told I had a very mild stomach disorder. In a sense, they were right. I hadn't eaten since breakfast. Herbology is another important part of traditional medicine. Over 3,000 herbs are cataloged and stored at Kung He. Some of them look like they were dug from the ground. Others take on a more modern appearance. Oriental cures may not be gaining acceptance among Western doctors, but a mistrust of technology has spurred an interest in traditional methods in some circles. However, Oriental doctors in Korea are privately worried that young Koreans are growing up in an age of band-aids and aspirin. As a measure of Oriental medicine's increasing popularity, more and more foreigners come to this hospital every year. But at the same time, more more young Koreans are abandoning tradition for the quicker cures of the West.
