Cardiovascular meaning heart and blood vessels in a couple different ways. The most important way is that it changes a woman's lipids. It's her blood cholesterol. We think that cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, are caused by the clogging of the arteries. Estrogen inhibits the bad lipids, they're called low-density lipoproteins, and you probably see this in the news all the time, called LDLs. Estrogen decreases those by about a third, and estrogen increases the good. Cholesterol called HDLs. But what's interesting is that that's only about a third of coronary artery disease, cardiovascular risk. Estrogen also works as an antioxidant. Estrogen works to help blood vessels heal themselves when they've been injured. And the third thing that estrogens do is they keep the smooth muscles in the blood vessels from constricting too much. So they keep their blood vessels open. The other big issue that we recommend estrogen replacement for is a thing called osteoporosis. Osteoporoses means a weakening or a breaking of the bones. Now, calcium in the bones is deposited throughout a woman's life, up until shortly before she goes through the menopause. After that, there will be a net loss of bone so that she is at great risk for fractures as the bone becomes weaker. We know that the estrogen replacement, even in the lowest doses. Will help keep calcium in the bones. It prevents the remodeling of bones. And it also increases calcium absorption from the intestines. And in that way, estrogen can help significantly prevent osteoporosis. Some of the most important new research that's coming out is related to estrogen and Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is more frequent in women than it is in men. And we know that women who are taking estrogen have a much lower incidence of Alzheimer's Disease. And if they have, when they get Alzheimer's, they get it to a much more mild degree. We know that estrogen has a very important and significant effect on mood. It inhibits depression, it decreases sleep problems, it decreases anxiety.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71395/file/157348#t=2318.44,2445.52
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71395/file/157348/transcript/89736/annotation/124
Speaker 58: They took away something that I had carefully considered, you know, in choosing a midwife.
