Just last spring, co-defendant Jason Wayne Rose was found guilty of aggravated murder and first degree robbery and was given the death penalty. Jones, who was 17 at the time of the killing, was convicted of lesser charges of intentional murder and third degree robbery. In today's sentence, Judge Gregory Foote pointed out that it was strictly a legal technicality that kept Jones from being convicted of aggravated murder. And that it was Jones' age that kept him from getting the death penalty. But Judge Foote said that doesn't change what Jones did, that he killed a young woman for no reason, a woman who trusted him, a woman that would still be alive today if Jones hadn't betrayed her. Foote says Jones and Rose ran around in the woods of East Springfield like a couple of kids in a fantasy game with tree forts and spears. He said their game turned tragic, sinister, and evil the night they killed Melissa Meyer. The judge gave Jones a life sentence with a mandatory minimum term of 25 years. He also gave the defendant five years on the robbery charge to be served concurrently with the murder charge. Foote told Jones, in reality, the most I can do is take away half your life. I never once heard you say you were sorry for what you did.
