When he decided to play music from the late 19th century, he knew he needed some help. Piano music from that era relies heavily on the foot pedals which Hockinberry can't manipulate. His feet and legs are paralyzed, but that didn't get in his way. He decided to build a machine to work the pedals for him. Every two years when your license plate renewal comes up, you'd have to have your car checked to make sure its emissions were within standards. If your car passed, you would get your new license plate stickers. If it failed, you have to the problem fixed before your new plates would be issued. In Portland, most drivers who failed the test managed to get their car in shape for less than $10. You also pay for passing the inspection, right now that's a $5 fee, and those fees cover the cost of running the entire program. Benefits include cleaner air and fuel savings. Those who oppose the usually controversial program say it infringes upon our constitutional rights, but so far that argument hasn't held up in court. The proposal still has a lot of roadblocks ahead. Not least of which is lukewarm support from some elected officials. Even if it passes all the barriers, the first car wouldn't pull into the inspection station for at least two years. And for those of you who paid your income taxes and have any money left over, let me give you some ideas on what kind of vegetables to buy this week. There's some good buys in the vegetable department, basically salad. We're getting some good buy's on carrots, local green onions, onions, radishes, red Let us cabbage, and tomatoes of all kinds. These are all very reasonably priced right now, and the prices will be coming down. A couple items that are higher priced in the vegetable department this week, cucumbers starting out of California, as high as $0.69 a pound, and head lettuce out of California which has had a little bit of rain off and on, as high 70 cents a head. Some places even higher. Turning to the other part of the vegetable apartment, We see California asparagus continue to come in at a little over a dollar a pound. We've got some Florida corn coming in now. It's a little high, quality is so-so, it will be improving. We've snow peas coming in at as high as $4 a pound, zucchini squash still coming from Mexico, almost a dollar pound, and spinach coming in locally now from Eastern Oregon, a little higher, 60 cents, 50 cents a bunch, the price will be coming down. Best buys this week, of course yellow onions as low as ten cents a pound. Castroville artichokes as low as three for a dollar. And my favorite, red bell peppers over a dollar a pound, but exceptionally high in vitamin C. You know, I get a little criticism for not paying my income taxes on time, but then, of course, I don't make much of a celery.
