Wilson performed the autopsy on 5-year-old Devin Hansaker, and in his words, he's never seen a child more battered. He told the courtroom Devin suffered two blows to the head, one more severe than the other. The injuries were no more than two to four weeks old. Asked by the state's attorney if such injuries could have been sustained at Jasper Park where the girl was pulled from the Willamette River this summer, Wilson said no. He testified that the only accidents that could have caused such a head injury would be a car wreck or a fall from a great height. Under cross-examination, Wilson's said removing evidence of prior injuries would not change his certainty about Devon being sexually abused. Today, the handsaker's family physician, Robert Velardi, also testified. Vallardi said that he never saw signs of sexual abuse, though he didn't see Devin after the age of three. He saw Devin for an eye injury that caused nerve damage and a fractured leg, the only two injuries for which medical records exist. He testified that Devin's mother told him a tree branch caused the eye injury. He says the leg injury did raise a red flag because it was a spiral break, which is unusual. However, Vallardi told the courtroom, when Devin was one, he did recommend that the handsakers become foster parents. That they were a loving and cohesive family.
